Alexander Griff (Bass) (Tbilisi, Georgia 1887 - Zagreb, Croatia 1962)



First he studied singing at the Warsaw Conservatory, then under Edouard De Reszke. He made his debut in Warsaw as Marcina in ‘’Verbum nobile’’ of S. Moniuszko. In 1913 he went to Paris, to perfect his vocal technique. He appeared in BarcelonaMadridParisLisbonSofiaPragueItaly,Mexico City and in South America (Buenos AiresRio de JaneiroMontevideo). In the 1925-1927 seasons he sang at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, from 1927 to 1930 he was a member of the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. His repertoire included Don Basilio in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Mephisto in ‘’Faust’’, Fiesco in ‘’Simon Boccanegra’’, King Heinrich in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Pogner in ‘’Meistersingern’’, Pimen in ‘’Boris Godunov’’ and many other parts. His sister was the famous contralto Marta Pospisvil-Griff.
