Maria Wohlówna (Soprano) (? Poland ? - Tiflis, Georgia 1924)
She studied singing at the school of singing under Maria Sobolewskiej in Warsaw. As a concert singer she made her debut in 1908. The same year she sang as a guest in Berlin and later inLondon, where she spent several months learning singing. In 1909 she gave a recital at the Warsaw Philharmonic. After returning, she made her debut on may 5, 1910 at the Warsaw Government Theatre in the title part in Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera ‘’Hrabina’’. Then, for five seasons she was engaged by the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. In 1915 she went to Russia, then toTiflis, where she appeared with great success several seasons. She was appreciated by the critics, for her unique voice and great technical skills. Her repertoire included Tatiana in ‘’Eugene Onegin’’, Mimi in ‘’La Bohème’’, Cio-Cio-San in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’, Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Marguerite in ‘’Faust’’. She was married twice. First she married to Nikolai Lewicki, Director of the Warsaw Opera, for the second time with Georgian bacteriologist, Dr. Eljawę. During her stay in Tiflis, she was arrested and murdered in a local jail.
