Walter Günther-Braun (Tenor) (1874? - Weimar 1947)




He studied with Törsleff in Leipzig, Eugene Wolff in Frankfurt a. M., Alfieri in Berlin and Felix von Kraus in Munich. He began his stage career during  the 1896-97 season at the Municipal Theatre of Cottbus and then sang successfully (primarily, as an operetta tenor) at the theaters of  Wiener Neustadt (1897-98), Salzburg (1898-99), Innsbruck (1899-1900) and at the Carl-Schultze's Hamburg Theatre (1900-01). Then he started to appear only in the opera performances with success and from 1901 to 1903 he sang at the Municipal Theatre of Mainz , then at the Municipal Theatre of Graz (1903-06), at the Stadttheater of  Wroclaw(1906-09) and from 1909-12 at the Munich Court Opera. From 1912-20 he belonged to the  ensemble of the Mannheim Court Theatre, from 1920-27 he was engaged to sing at the Municipal Theatre of  Dortmund. Since 1905 he appeared in several guest performances at the Court Opera of  Dresden. In 1918 he appeared in Mannheimin the premiere of  Paul von Klenau's opera ''Kjartan und Gudrun'', singing the part of  Haldor. He concentrated chiefly in the dramatic Wagner repertory: as Erik in ''Fliegenden Holländer'', Tannhäuser, Walther von Stolzing in ''Meistersingern'', Tristan, but he also appeared as Florestan in ''Fidelio'',  Hüon in  ''Oberon'' of  Weber, Eleazar in ''La Juive'' of Halévy, Samson in ''Samson et Dalila'' of Saint-Saëns,  José in ''Carmen'' and Canio in ''Pagliacci''. In 1908 he made a few records for Gramophone at Breslau.
