Stefano Ballarini (Istvan Balla) (Baritone) (Budapest, Hungary 1902- USA 1979)

He made his debut in 1925 in Breslau. At La Scala he debuted (as Ballarini) in 1928 as Donner in ‘’Das Rheingold’’ of Wagner. He also appeared at the Berlin and Dresden State Operas, at the Buenos Aires Teatro Colón and the Vienna Opera. Apparently he was first heard in the U.S. again as Donner in a Lewisohn Stadium Wagner Festival, 1937, directed by Reiner. In 1939 he made his debut with the San Francisco Opera. His U.S. home base seems to have been New York, where he appeared on a number of occasions as a leading baritone with Salmaggi. He also appeared with the New York City Opera (as Stephan Ballarini), his debut and farewell as Escamillo on Oct. 25th, 1952.
