Juanita Caracciolo (Soprano) (Ravenna 1888 - Milan 1924 )





She received her education at the Milan Conservatory with Clelia Sangiorgi. She debuted in 1908 at Teatro Politeama, Genoa as Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’ and sang there also in ‘’Le Maschere’’ of Mascagni. In 1911 she married the conductor Giacomo Armani. After she had appeared during twelve years in Italian provincial theaters, she had in 1920 a sensational success when she sang in Puccini’s ‘’Manon Lescaut’’ at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome. The same year she had there another success in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ as Cio-Cio San, than as Margherita in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito and in the premiere of the opera ‘’La via delle finestre’’ of R. Zandonai. In 1919 she guested at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo, in 1920 at the Teatro Comunale, Bologna (as Manon Lescaut of Puccini) and at the Teatro Verdi, Pisa (here in the title role of Catalani’s ‘’La Wally’’). In 1920 she appeared at the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires and at the Opera House of Rio de Janeiro as Butterfly and as Octavian in ‘’Rosenkavalier’’, then also at the Teatro Real, Madrid. In 1922 she came to the Milan, La Scala; here she debuted as Eva in ‘’Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg’’ of Wagner. She sang at La Scala also as Manon in Puccini’s ‘’Manon Lescaut’’, and as Louise in the opera of the same name of Charpentier. In autumn, 1923 she fallen ill after the birth of a child and died next year at the age of 36 years.
