Albert Huberty (Bass) (Febr. 1881 Seraing-sur-Meuse, † 10. 3. 1955 Ostende)





He studied singing at the Conservatoire de Bruxelles with Désiré Demest. In 1903 he joined as Comprimario to the Flemish Opera in Antwerp, in the 1903-1906 seasons he sang similar roles at the Théâtre de la Haye in the Hague. After perfecting his vocal technique under the famous bass Hypolite Belhomme in Paris, he became in 1908 the first bass of the Opéra de Rouen. Guest performances followed in Nantes and Algiers. Then he sang in the 1908-1909 season at the Covent Garden in London, in the 1909-1911 seasons at the Opera in New Orleans and in the 1911-1913 seasons he appeared in Montreal (Canada). In  the 1913-1914 season Huberty was active at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège. In 1915 he joined to the Opéra-Comique in Paris, in 1916 he was engaged by the Paris Grand Opéra, where he made his debut as Capulet in C. Gounod’s ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ and worked here up to the end of his career (1939). Here he appeared in 1923 in the première of the opera ‘’Khovantchina’’ of M. Mussorgsky. In 1927 he performed in the unforgettable Paris première of R. Strauss’s ‘’Rosenkavalier’’. He sang there in the following opera premieres:  ‘’La Légende de Saint Christophe’’ by  d'Indy (6. 6. 1920), ‘’Le Jardin du Paris’’ by A. Bruneau (29. 10. 1923), ‘’L'Arlequin’’ of Max d'Olonne (22. 12. 1924), ‘’Virginie’’ of Alfred Bruneau (6. 1. 1931), ‘’Roland et le mauvais garçon’’ of Henri Rabaud (28. 5. 1934) and ‘’La Chartreuse de Parme’’ of Henri Sauguet (16. 3. 1939). He guested regularly at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. here he had in 1920 a special success in G. Verdi’s ‘’Falstaff’’, later as König Marke in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’. He made guest appearances also in Vichy, Antwerp, Ostend as well as in 1921 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Later he taught singing at the Conservatoire de Bruxelles.
