His real name was
Philippe Altare. He studied singing in Paris and made his debut in 1934 at the Opernhaus
in Lüttich. In 1935 he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made
his debut as Gérald in ‘’Lakmé’’ of L. Delibes.
During the following ten years he appeared there as Almaviva in ‘’Barbiere di
Siviglia’’, Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’, Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’, Cavaradossi
in ‘’Tosca’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, De Grieux in ‘’Manon’’, Werther
in ‘’Werther’’, Nadir in ‘’Pêcheurs de perles’’, José in ‘’Carmen’’, Vincent in
‘’Mireille’’, Wilhelm Meister in ‘’Mignon’’ and Julien in ‘’Louise’’. From 1940
to 1946 he also performed at the Grand Opéra in Paris, where among other things
he appeared as Faust, Roméo in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ and Mylio in ‘’Le Roi d'Ys’’.
Beside guest's appearances at the famous French provincial theaters he also sang
in Switzerland, Romania and Italy, here among other things in the 1947-1948 season
at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli. His career lasted up to the beginning of the
1950’s.
