First he studied singing with Oscar Saenger in
New York, then in Germany. His stage debut occurred in 1903 at the Municipal
Theater in Hamburg as King Heinrich in ‘’Lohengrin’’. Till 1908 he remained in
Hamburg. In 1908 he appeared there in the premiere of the opera
‘’Sternengebot’’ of Siegfried Wagner. In the 1906-1908 season he sang at the
Bayreuth Festival. Cosima and Siegfried Wagner personally introduced him to
appear at the Bayreuth Festival. In the 1908-1914 seasons he was a member of
the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as king Heinrich in
‘’Lohengrin’’. He appeared there primarily in Wagner repertoire, however sang
there in 1908 also the part of Tommaso in the American première of the opera
‘’Tiefland’’ by E. d'Albert. From 1917 to 1923 he led the vocal classes in the
conservatoire of Kansas City and then lived as pedagogue and choir conductor in
New York.
