Pierre Cornubert (Tenor) (Paris 1863 – Paris 1922)



He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in 1887 at the Opéra-Comique as Daniel in  ‘’Le châlet’’ of Adam. Here in 1889  Cornubert created the role of Byzantine Herald in the premiere of Massenet’s ‘’Esclarmonde’’. Then he sang among other things in in Rouen, Marseille and Montpellier. Since 1899 he started his international career and during the same year sang at the Teatro Tacón in Havana and at the Teatro Rinascimento in Mexico City. Then he was engaged by the Metropolitan opera in New York where he debuted in 1900 as Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer’s ‘’L’Africana’’. At the Metropolitan Opera he also performed in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’, ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’, ‘’Carmen’’ and in ‘’Pagliacci’’. In 1904 as a mamber of the San Carlo Opera Company he made guest appearance at Covent Garden in London. From 1899 to 1900 Cornubert sang at the Teatro Lirico in Milan where he appeared in ‘’Andrea Chenier’’ with Mario Sammarco and Eva Tetrazzini and in ‘’Guglielmo Ratcliff’’ with Febea Strakosch and Giuseppe Pacini. During the same period Cornubert appeared also at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin. Here together with Mary D'Arneiro and Alessandro  Arcangeli he performed in Meyerbeer’s ‘’L’Africana’’. In 1903 he sang in Cairo. Two years later he was in Oporto where at the Teatro S. Joao he again performed in Giordano’s ’’Andrea Chenier’’.  In 1919 he became a professor of the Paris Conservatoire. His wife, Suzanne Cornubert, was also an opera singer.
