Adolphe (Alphonse) Maréchal (Tenor) (Liège 1867 - Brussels 1935)

He studied at the Liège Conservatory and made his debut in 1891 at Dijon. Then he sang throughout the French provincial theaters. He was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in 1895, making his debut as Don José in ‘’Carmen’’ on 7 October 1895. His repertoire at the Opéra-Comique covered ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ (Turridu), ‘’Don Juan’’ (Ottavio), ‘’Les dragons de Villars’’ (Sylvain), ‘’Lakmé’’ (Gérald), ‘’Manon’’ (des Grieux), ‘’Mireille’’ (Vincent), ‘’La Navarraise’’ (Araquil), ‘’Le pardon de Ploërmel’’ (Un faucheur), ‘’Les pêcheurs de perles’’ (Nadir), ‘’Le pré aux clercs’’ (Mergy) and ‘’Le roi d'Ys’’ (Mylio). He sang in several premières, most notably those of ‘’Louise’’ (1900), ‘’Grisélidis’’ (1901), ‘’Le Reine Fiammette’’ (1903), ‘’le Chemineau’’ (1907), ‘’Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame’’ at the Monte Carlo Opera as well as enjoying a success in the Paris premiere of ‘’La Boheme’’ (Rodolphe). In 1902 he made his successful debut at Covent Garden in London as Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’. Maréchal also appeared with great success at the Palais Garnier, Nice, Moscow, and Brussels. He retired after a crisis of voice and health in 1907.
