Jovita Fuentes (Soprano) (Capiz, Philippines 1895 - ? 1978)



At the beginning of the 20th she came to Europe and gave there guest performances in the title roles of the operas G. Puccini’s ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ and ‘’Iris’’ by P. Mascagni. At that time the authentic representation of these roles by Japanese and other Asian artists after the example of Japanese soprano Tamaka Miura came to fashion. She appeared with success in Holland, France, England and Germany. In German operatic stages she also appeared as Salome in the opera of the same name by R. Strauss. In 1930 she sang at the Oper in Frankfurt a. M. the role of Cio-Cio-San in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ and Liu in G. Puccini’s ‘’Turandot’’. In North America she guested during the 1930’s with the San Carlo Opera Company. She also appeared in the concert hall. After her retirement she opened in Manila an opera school and took on the music life in her native country, the Philippines, big influence. She was called ''First Lady of Philippine Music''.
