Arthur Fleischer (Baritone) (Wien 1881 - San Francisco 1949)





He received his education at the Vienna Konservatorium and had successively the following engagements: In the 1906-1909 seasons appeared at Komischen Oper in Berlin, in 1909 at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, from 1910 to 1914 at the Hoftheater in Hannover. Here he further studied under Hans Emge and sang in the 1914-1921 seasons at the Volksoper in Vienna, from 1921 to 1923 at the Staatsoper in Dresden and from 1924 to 1927 at the Staatsoper in Berlin. Then he made guest appearances in Vienna, however, had again in the 1932-1933 season a guest engagement by the Theater in Graz. He gave guest performances at the Opernhaus in Leipzig(1907), Hofoper in Dresden (1909), Deutschen Theater in Prag (1919 and 1920) and Staatsoper inVienna (1919, 1920, 1925). In 1927 he appeared in Madrid; he travelled around HollandItaly andFinland. His leading roles were: Pizarro in ‘’Fidelio’’, Wolfram in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Wotan in ‘’Die Walkure’’, Hans Sachs in ‘’Die meistersinger von Nürnberg’’, Sebastiano in ‘’Tiefland’’, Valentin in ‘’Faust’’, Count di Luna in ‘’Trovatore’’, Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’ and Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’. In 1920 he appeared at the Volksoper in Vienna in the German première of P. Mascagni’s ‘’Lodoletta’’. As a Jew since 1933 he couldn't sing in Germany and emigrated to theUSA. There his son worked under the name Thomas Martin (1910-84) as a conductor and translator of opera librettos. In 1917 he appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste as Kurwenal in ''Tristan und Isolde''.
