Giuseppe Maggi (Baritone) (Alessandria 1865 - ?)

He made his debut in 1889 at the Teatro Politeama Facchinetti in Vercelli as Conte di Luna in ‘’Il Trovatore’’. In 1892 he appeared at the Teatro Grande of Brescia in Verdi’s ‘’Simon Boccanegra’’, two years later at the Teatro Dal Verme, Milan Maggi sang in ‘’Rigoletto’’. Already in 1894 he made guest appearances in Russia. Here he sang in Moscow in an opera troop which the Russian baritone and impresario Korsoff had put together. His daughter, the later famous coloratura soprano Lucette Korsoff, debuted in 1894 with Giuseppe Maggi as a partner in ‘’La serva padrona’’ of Pergolesi. This opera troop also took part in tours of an opera society through Russia and Poland. In 1900 he guested once more in Brescia, now as a Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’; also in Bucharest (1901). In the 1905-06 season he was engaged to sing at the Teatro Albisu in Havana; here he sang leading baritone roles  in ‘’Aida’’, ‘’Rigoletto’’, ‘’La Traviata’’, ‘’Il Trovatore’’, ‘’Tosca’’, ‘’I Puritani’’, ‘’Ernani’’ and in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod. In 1905 he guested at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo as Riccardo in ‘’I Puritani’’ with Amelia Pinkert and Alessandro Bonci as partners. In 1911 he traveled with the Lombardi Opera Company through North America and appeared above all in California. In 1913 he sang in Alessandria in opera ‘’Andrea del Sarto’’ of Baravalle. Since 1900 he was married to Gladys Dode, an english singer. Probably he retired from the stage in 1913 and maybe then he lived in England and worked there as a vocal pedagogue.
