Jose Maristany (Tenor) (Masnou, Catalonia 1871 – Buenos Aires, Argentina 1932)

He was born in catalonian town Masnou, Spain. It seems to me that he performed only in South American opera theatres from 1895 to 1905. He spent most part of his career appearing on the opera theatres of Montevideo. He survived a shipwreck when he was travelling to Montevideo to marry. After finishing his carrer he settled in Buenos Aires where he opened Academy of Music. Due to the difficult economic situation he lost his fortune. Maristany died in Buenos Aires in 1932.

His career evolved as follows:

1898 Montevideo  Teatro Stella d'Italia Ballo in Maschera (Riccardo)
1898 Rosario di Santa Fè  Teatro Olimpo Ballo in Maschera (Riccardo)
1898 Rosario di Santa Fè  Teatro Olimpo Carmen (Don Jose)

  1. It is kind of a sad story. I don´t kike the fact that somebody so talented and with a nice personality had to go through that. I think that when I was in the furnished apartments in buenos aires I rented during my stay in Argentina, I was told about him and his academy. I think I even saw the place where it was located!

    1. Hola Cecilia,
sabes cual era el segundo apellido del tenor Maristany? creo que podemos tener antepasados comunes. ¿Cómo se llamaba tu abuela?
      Gracias

  4. I just saw a documentary on the shipwreck of the Sirio. It drew my attention the name of José Maristany, as my ancestors come from El Masnou and my grandfather's name was Jaume Gibernau Maristany. I was also shocked by the fact that the documentary said he lost his voice due to trauma of the shipwreck. I was moved as, being a singer myself, I also went through the terrible experience of losing my voice due to a traumatic situation. But now I see here that he, fortunately, kept on singing.
Searching in the Internet, I saw that all the info about the shipwreck says that José (Josep should be the name) Maristany was Italian!! Do you know why he appears as Italian in the historical records?
    Thank you very much.

    1. I just not well understand now the tenor Jose Maristany was your grandfather or no? and what concern to his recordings, he sang all life italian repertoire (although he never sang in italian opera houses) and consequently he sang italian repertoire on gramophone.
