His real name was Bohdan Procházka. From 1897-1900 he studied at the Pivodově singing school and also privately with K. Kovařovic. He made his debut at the National Theatre of Prague in Wagner's "Lohengrin" (1899). Then he was a member of the F. Trnky’s opera company (1902), sang also in Pilsen (1902-1903), and at the National Theatre in Brno (1903-1905), where he performed in the world premiere of Janáček's famous opera "jenůfa". After this he went to Viennato study singing with E. Robinson (1905-1907). Thanks to his help first he became a member of the local theatre Hofoper, then was engaged by the German Theatre in Olomouc. In the 1907-1908 season he appeared at the  Hofoper Wien, then from 1908-1911 at the Volksoper Wien. He appeared briefly in Berlin, but goined in 1911 to the National Theatre of Prague, whose member he remained for 27 years and retired from the stage in 1938. In 1913 he appeared in Praguein the local premiere of ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’, the next year in the première of ‘’Parsifal’’. On 27.4.1927 he sang there in the premiere of the opera "Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer" of Jaromir Weinberger. Internationally he was known by his guest performances abroad.  appeared with success also in North America.
