He was one of the best bass/baritones of his time. He was born in Novocherkassk (according to some, in Rostov-on-Don) in a family locksmith. He studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the class of S. Gabel . In 1896 he made his debut on the opera stage in the entreprise of A. Tsereteli (Kharkov ) as Gremin in ‘’Eugene Onegin’’. From 1897 to 1918 he was soloist of the St. Petersburg ’s Mariinsky Theatre, and his best roles were Susanin ("Life for the Tsar" by M. Glinka), Farlaf ( "Ruslan and Ludmila" of Glinka), Miller ("Mermaid" of Dargomyzhsky), Mephistophele ("Faust" by C. Gounod ), Demon in A. Rubinstein’s ‘’Demon’’, Dobrynya Nikitich in A. Gretchaninov’s ‘’Dobrynya Nikitich’’. At the Mariinsky Theatre took part in the operas " Boheme" by Puccini, where he sang the role of Schaunard , and "Nal and Damayanti’’ of Arensky. Toured with the troupe of N. Figner (Odessa , Penza , Samara, etc.), also appeared on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, in Riga , Baku , Kiev , Odessa and other cities. He died of tuberculosis in St. Petersburg in 1918.
