First he received
his education in Cardiff,
then continued in Milan. Later he perfected his vocal technique under
Oscar
Daniel in Berlin. He made his debut during the early 1930’s at the
Teatro San
Carlo in Napoli and was engaged in 1934 by the Sadler's Wells Theatre in
London.
Long time he remained the first baritone of this Theatre. Especially he
was highly appreciated in Italian repertoire; thus he sang in 1938 the
part
of Posa in the English première of G. Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlo’’ at the
Sadler's
Wells Opera. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air
force and
then again in the 1945-1948 seasons appeared at the the Sadler's Wells
Theatre.
Later he still made guest appearances, partly with Carl Rose Opera
Company. Later
he worked as vocal pedagogue at the Welsh University in Aberystwyth. Since 1969 he was a professor of
the Royal Academy of Music in London. Known soprano Rita Hunter belonged to his
pupils.
