Alexander Aleksandrovich (Tenor) (Nizhny Novgorod 1881 – USA 1955)




His real surname was Pokrovski. He studied physics and mathematics at the St. Petersburg university. Aleksandrovitch studied singing with the tenor I.Tomars, and acting with A. Petrovski. He made his debut at the Mariinski in 1909 as Sinodal (‘’Demon’’). He sang there up to 1919. In 1913 following the advice of Diagilev, he sang during the Russian seasons in Paris and Londonin "Boris Godunov". In 1916, Aleksandrovich made his debut at the Bolshoi as Lenski and Berendei. In 1919, Aleksandrovich left Russia. He sang concerts in Germania, Paris (there in 1922, he sang a series of concerts dedicated to the history of Russian music), and Barcelona. In the 1930s, he sang with the Parisian Russian opera (director Zeretelli).

Gavriil (Gabriel) Morskoy (Tenor) (Ukraine, Chernigov province 1862 - St. Petersburg 1914)



His real name was Heinrich Janchevetzki. He was born on March 23rd., 1862 in the. During his childhood he sang in a choir in Arseni a city in the area of Kiev. Morskoy finished the Chernigov grammar school and then went to the Petersburg Capella. He studied singing during the period 1882-89 at the Petersburg conservatoire with Everardi, Gabel and Palechek. In 1889, Morskoy made his debut in opera in Odessa (1889-92), then sang in Kiev (1892-95). During 1895-1906, he was at the Mariinski Theatre (Radames, José, Raoul, Lenski). He had a strong voice with a range up to high C. His repertory was around 50 roles, among them: Sobinin(Ivan Susanin-Glinka), Hermann, Samson, Vodemon, Werther, Ioann. He went also on tour in England. All his records are rare.

Oscar Kamionsky (Baritone) (Kiev 1869 - Yalta 1917)

From 1888-91 he studied at the St. Petersburg. Conservatory under Everardi, Gabel and Palechek. On the advice of A. Rubinstein  he vent to Italyto study singing with  E. Rossi. In 1892 he made his debut at the Teatro Bellini in Naples, then sang in the opera houses of  Florence (Tonio, "Pagliacci" R Leoncovallo) and the Royal Opera House in Athens. In 1893 he returned to Russia. He has performed on opera stages of Kharkiv (1893-94, 1898-99), Kiev(1894-95, 1902-04), Rostov-on-Don (1895-96), Tiflis(1896-1901) etc. In the 1904-05 he sang at the Private Opera House of Tsereteli in St. Petersburg. From 1905-08 Kamionsky appeared at the S. Zimin’s Opera House in Moscow. In 1909 he made a tour around the cities of Siberia and Japan. He retired from the stage in 1915. Kamionsky had a relatively small, but beautiful voice with fine upper register. Being master of bel canto and performing the roles of both lyrical. and dramas. character Kamiosnky called the "Russian Battistini". He appeared to more than 40 roles. As the preeminent Russian baritone of the period he took his escalated image to heart. Although he has been described as self-centered in nature, no one could doubt the brilliance and accuracy of his singing. His early death has been attributed to cancer.

Andrey Labinsky (Tenor) (Kharkov 1871 – Moscow 1941)

During his childhood, he was in Siberia, where his father was banished for revolutionary activity. He studied at the Tyumenschool. Labinsky studied singing at the Petersburgconservatoire (1895-1899) with Gabel and Samus. He made his debut in 1899 at the Mariinsky (debut in as Berendey – ‘’Snegurochka’’). At that theater he sang the role of Vsevolod in the 1907 premiere of Rimsky-Korsakov's ‘’The Invisible City of Kitezh’’. He sang there up to 1912 and during 1919-1924. Labinsky sang at the Bolshoi during 1912-1919 and during 1924-1926. He toured often much Russia and was one of the first Russian singers to sing for the first time in Japan. Upon his retirement he became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. His soft voice had a wide range up to high f. Among his best lyrical roles were Lensky, Dubrovsky, Vladimir (‘’Prince Igor’’), Indian guest, Sinodal, Alfredo, Duca, and Almaviva. He also attempted to sing roles such Raoul, Samson, and Radames. Labinsky recorded more than 300 sides (1901-1915). He died in Moscow on August 8th 1941 during an air raid.

He studied singing under the pedagogue Stradivarius and made his debut in 1905 at the Teatro Rossini of Venice in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’.
