Carel van Hulst (Baritone) (Amsterdam, Netherlands 1881 – San Francisco, Northern California 1937)




His real name was Carel Butter and under it he appeared in Holland, while he did his international career under the family name of his mother van Hulst. He receive his education in Amsterdam andBerlin among other things with Cornélie van Zanten and made his debut in 1906 at the Court Opera in Berlin as Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. After a successful guest performance he was engagaed in 1911 by the Court Opera in Vienna, to which he belonged, however, only a few months. In 1914 he made guest appearances at the Covent Garden in London as Amfortas and Telramund. Already in 1913 he appeared there in the première of the opera ‘’Joseph’’ of E. Méhul. In 1913 he visited Russia. During the years of the First World War he sang under the name Carel Butter at smaller opera societies in Holland. Thus he appeared in 1918 with the Residentie Opera-Vereeniging in the Dutch première of G. Verdi’s ‘’Falstaff’’ in the title role. In the 1915-1916 season he sang in the ensemble of the Italian Opera in Holland the role of Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’ and the Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’. In  the 1917-1918 season he belonged to the Chicago Opera. In 1919 he guested again at the Covent Garden as Rigoletto. Later he worked as pedagogue in San Francisco.
