Clarence Whitehill (Bass/Baritone) (Marengo, Iowa 1871, 5/11 - New York 1932, 18/12)

He began his education with L. A. Phelps in Chicago, then went to Europe, where he became a pupil of Giraudet and Giovanni Sbriglia. In 1898 he made his debut at the Théatre de la Monnaie in Brussels as Count Capulet in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ by C. Gounod. In 1899, under the artistic name Eugene Clarence (as the only American opera singer), he appeared at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Nilakantha in ‘’Lakmé’’. In 1900 he joined the Savage Opera Company and went on a tour in USA. In 1901 he made his German debut at the Stadttheater in Lübeck. In 1902 he perfected his vocal technique with Julius Stockhausen in Frankfurt am Main. In the 1902-1904 seasons he sang at the Stadttheater in Elberfeld. From 1904 to 1909 he was engaged by the Opernhaus in Cologne. On 30. 3. 1904 he sang in Elberfeld in the premiere of the opera ‘’Koanga’’ by F. Delius. In 1905 he had a huge success in Cologne in the German première of I. de Lara’s ‘’Messaline’’. In 1905 he appeared at the Hoftheater in Hannover. In the 1906-1907 season Whitehill joined to the Hofoper of Munich. In 1908 he guested in Amsterdam. The public especially appreciated his interpretations in Richard Wagner’s operas (he studied the Wagner style under Julius Kniese in Bayreuth by the errand of Cosima Wagner). At Bayreuth festival he appeared in the following operas: ‘’Tannhäuser’’ (Wolfram, 1904), ‘’Parsifal’’ (Amfortas,) and Götterdämmerung (Gunther, 1908-1909). In 1909 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as Amfortas in ‘’Parsifal’’. Till 1910 and then again from 1914 to 1932 he belonged to the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera. At the Metropolitan Opera he sang in the following opera premières: "The Pipe of Desire" by Converse (1910), "Ägyptischer Helena" by R. Strauss (1928) and ‘’Louise’’ of G. Charpentier (1921) and "Violanta" of Korngold (1927). In the 1911-1916 seasons he was engaged by the Chicago Opera. In the 1905-1910 seasons he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London. Here he sang in the English première of R. Strauss’s ‘’Salome’’ (Jochanaan, 1910). In 1909 he performed at Grand Opéra in ‘’Tannhäuser’’ (Wolfram) and "Walküre" (Wotan). In 1914 and 1922 he was to be heard as a member of the British National Opera  Company in London. After his retirement he taught singing in New York.

Adolf Mühlmann (Bass/Baritone) (Kischineff, Bessarabien 26. 12. 1866 – Chicago 27. 04. 1938)

He was born into jewish family. His real name was Alter Milman. During three years he received singing lessons by a Jewish choirmaster and as a member of choir he sang in the synagogue of Odessa. In 1887 he went to Vienna to continue his education. In 1890 he made his debut at the German Theater in Rotterdam, remained there for a season and sang in the 1891-1892 season at the Opernhaus in Düsseldorf. In the 1892-1898 seasons he joined to the Theater in Wroclaw. In 1898 he became a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. During the following twelve years he appeared there in a huge number of parts. In the 1899-1903 seasons he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London. In 1902 he sang at Hofoper in Wien. As a guest Mühlmann also performed at the Court Opera of St. Petersburg. In North America he sang at the opera houses of Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. After ending of his stage career he sat down in Chicago as pedagogue and music critic. His repertoire included Pizarro in ‘’Fidelio’’, Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Wolfram in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Kothner in "Meistersingern", Gunther in "Götterdämmerung", father in ‘’Hansel and Gretel’’ etc.

After first lessons from his mother, Ellison Van Hoose studied in New York for five years with Perry Averill and Isadore Luckstone, then with Fidele Koenig and Jean De Reszke in Paris, Sir Henry Wood and Franco Navora in London and Antonio Cotogni in Rome. He sang tenor in New York church choirs until 1897, when he was engaged by the Damrosch-Ellis Opera Co., and made his debut in Philadelphia as Tannhauser. During two years he remained with this opera troupe. Then came to England, where additionally studied under Sir Henry Wood and was active as a concert and oratorio singer. With the New York Oratorio Society he participated in the American premiere of Elgar's 'Dream of Gerontius' on Dec, 6, 1903. In 1903-1905 he made two American tours with Mme. Melba, and in 1906-07 with Mme. Sembrich. In 1908 he went to Germany, where appeared as a concert singer, among other things with the Gewandhaus under Arthur Nikisch. In the 1909-1910 he was engaged by the Municipal Theater in Mainz. In the 1911-1912 season he sang at the Chicago Opera (debut as Manrico in ‘’Il Trovatore’’), however, Van Hoose had his most important success at the concert hall. Later he taught singing in New York.

Edward Johnson (Tenor) (August 22, 1878 Guelph, Ontario, Canada † April 20, 1959 Toronto, Canada)

Already as a child he belonged to the "Fife- and- Drum-Band", then he studied piano and sang at the choir in University of Toronto. He began his vocal education with Mrs. von Feilitsch in New York and then went to Europe, where he became a pupil of Vincenzo Lombardi in Florence. In 1908 at the New York Broadway Theatre he sang the part of Niki in the American première of the operetta "Ein Walzertraum" by Oscar Straus. He made his debut in 1912 under the name Edoardo Di Giovanni at the Teatro Verdi in Padua in ‘’Andrea Chénier’’ of U. Giordano. He had a huge success in Italy and was engaged  in 1914 by La Scala, where he also appeared as Folco in P. Masccagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’ and Walter in A. Catalani’s ‘’Loreley’’ (1916). Here he created in 1914 the part of Parsifal in the Italian première. Till 1919 he belonged to the most successful tenors of La Scala. At the Teatro Costanzi of Roma he appeared in 1913 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Uguale Fortuna’’ of Vincenzo Tommasini. He appeared in this time in several other opera premieres: on 20. 3. 1915 at La Scala in ‘’Fedra’’ of I. Pizzetti, in 1914 at the Teatro Costanzi in Roma in "L'ombra di Don Giovanni" of Alfano, on 3. 11. 1918 at La Scala in ‘’La Nave’’ of I. Montemezzi, in 1918 at the Teatro Costanzi in ‘’Maria di Magdala’’ by Vincenzo Michetti. He sang in the Italian première of G. Puccini’s ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’ on 11. 1. 1919 at the Teatro Costanzi in Roma (as Rinuccio). He was successful at the leading Italian operatic stages also as Siegfried and Tannhäuser. In 1916 he made guest appearances at the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, in 1917 at the Teatro Real in Madrid. In 1923 he appeared with the British National Opera Company at the Covent Garden as Faust of C. Gounod. In the 1919-1922 seasons he was active at the Chicago Opera, where he made his debut as Loris in ‘’Fedora’’ of U. Giordano. In the 1922-1935 seasons he had a successful career at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as Avito in ‘’L'Amore dei tre Re’’ of I. Montemezzi. Also here he sang in different opera premieres: on 17. 2. 1927 in "The King's Henchman" and on 7. 2. 1931 in ‘’Peter Ibbetson’’, both of Deems Taylor, on 10. 2. 1934 in ‘’Merry Mount’’ of Howard Hanson; in 1930 he appeared in the première of N. Rimsky-Korssakov’s ‘’Sadko’’. He sang in 1925 the part of Pelléas in C. Debussy’s ‘’Pelléas et Mélisande’’ in the first performance of this opera at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1935, after the sudden death of Herbert Witherspoon, he became general  manager of the Metropolitan Opera. Since 1950 he lived in his hometown Guelph, however, took an interest in the music life of his native country and worked at the University of Toronto lessons. Giuseppe Vogliotti (Tenor) (Torino, Italia 1882 - Torino, Italia After 1955)

First he learned the occupation of a gardener, then studied singing at the Liceo Musicale in Torino by Fausto Del Marchi, later with Oreste Taverna and Alessandro Rissone (1900-1902). In 1907 he made his debut as Ernesto at the Teatro dell'Alleanza Coopoerativa in ‘’Don Pasquale’’. Already in 1909 he appeared at the Teatro Bosque in Barcelona among other things as Rodolfo in ‘’Boheme’’. In 1910 he sang with great success at the Teatro La Fenice in Venezia in G. Rossini’s '’’La Cambiale di Matrimonio’’ and at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milano in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor ‘’ opposite  Amelita Galli-Curci (1911). In 1915 he went for four years to America. Here he sang first in Rosario di Santa Fè, then in Buenos Ayres, Montevideo, San Juan de Portorico and Santo Domingo. He appeared in Buenos Aires in a gala performance of G. Puccini’s ‘’Manon Lescaut’’ before the Argentine president Feliciano Viera, and undertook a vast guest performance tour in the 1915-1916 season  through the USA. In 1918 he was staying in Havana and in San Juan di Portorico, in the end, he visited Puerto Rico and Caracas. He returned to his Italian native country and in 1919 appeared at the Teatro Nazionale in Roma as Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’, Enzo in ‘’La Gioconda’’ and Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. In 1920 he sang the part of Enzo in ‘’La Gioconda’’ under the direction of Pietro Mascagni in Livorno. In 1925 he appeared as soloist in a concert at the Teatro Regio in Torino.  Still in 1955 he took part in a concert at the Turin church San Mauro. He was a correspondent of English and American music magazines and appeared also in Italian sound films.

Galliano Masini (Tenor) (Livorno, Italy February 7, 1896 † Livorno, Italy February 15, 1986)

He was trained by maestro Laura in Milan and made his debut in 1923 at the Teatro in Livorno as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. He appeared at the leading Italian opera theaters and in 1930 made his debut at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma as Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. From 1930 to 1940 he often sang at this opera house. Since 1932 he also appeared at La Scala, among other things in 1934 as Paco in the première of M. de Falla’s ‘’La vida breve’’, in 1932 in the premiere of G. Marinuzzi’s ‘’Palla De'Mozzi’’. In 1930, 1932, 1940 and 1947 he was to be heard as a guest at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, in 1933 at the Opera of Rio de Janeiro. He made guest appearances at the Arena di Verona (1935-1936, 1946) and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. In 1940 at La Scala, during the annual celebration of Pietro Mascagni’s opera ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, he was chosen by the composer to sing the part of Turiddu. In the 1937-1938 season he appeared at the Chicago Opera, in the 1938-1939 season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut as Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’and further sang there as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’ and Radames in ‘’Aida’’. The part of Radames he also sang after the Second World War in July, 1945, during the first festival at the Thermes de Caracalla, Roma. Masini appeared as a guest also at the Grand Opéra in Paris. He was known also as film singer. His brother Cesare Masini-Sperti (1904-76) had a career of comprimario at Italian operatic theaters.

Tandy Mackenzie (Tenor) (Maui, Hawaiian Islands March 10, 1892 - Los Angeles, California, USA November 9, 1963)

He was the first operatic tenor from the islands to gain worldwide fame. First he learned to read music at Kamehameha Schools. He studied voice in New York, Paris and Milan. His first professional appearance was as a member of a quartet in Bird of Paradise in 1915. His operatic debut was as Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’ at the Théâtre of Cannes (1929). His operatic career spanned the globe from San Francisco to Prague. Made many recordings, performed on radio and appeared in films San Francisco, Anthony Adverse, Going to Town and There's Magic in Music. Though he spent little time in his native Hawaii, he always included Hawaiian songs in his repertoire and was considered a gifted interpreter of his homeland's music.

Aldo Ferracuti (Tenor) (Fermo, Italia 1907 † Roma, Italia 24. 02. 1981)

He studied singing in Roma and made his debut in 1930 at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. During the 1940’s  here his repertoire included Cassio in G. Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’, David in ‘’ Meistersingern’’, Froh in ‘’ Rheingold’’, Alfredo in ’’La Traviata’’  and Maurizio in ‘’Adriana Lecouvreur’’. He appeared in the Roman première of Richard Strauss’s ‘’Arabella’’ as Elemer (1938). In 1939 he sang at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli (where he also appeared in 1938 and 1940) in the premiere of the opera ‘’Il Malato imaginario’’ by Jacopo Napoli. After the Second World War among other things he appeared during the festival of the Thermes de Caracalla in  Roma as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’ (1945). He made guest appearances at the London Cambridge Theatre as Cavaradossi and Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’. During an Australian tour he sang the part of Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and Kalaf in ‘’Turandot’’. Beside his appearances at the famous Italian operatic stages it came to guest performances in Switzerland, in Germany, South Africa and Spain. He was married the soprano Maria Huder (1907-1972), a known opera singer.

Alfons Fügel (Tenor) (Bonlanden ad Fildern, Germania August 10, 1912 - Esslingen, Germania October 8, 1960)

At first he became a tiler. After one had discovered his beautiful voice, he auditioned to the director of the Munich State Opera Clemens Krauss and then began a short study. He made his debut in 1937 at the Municipal Theater of Ulm; from there he joined in 1938 to the Opera House of Graz. In 1940 he was engaged by the State Opera in Munich. Here he had a huge success. During the years of war he guested in Holland as Don Ottavio in ‘’ Don Giovanni’’. Till 1945 he remained at the Munich Opera. After the Second World War he still made guest appearances at the Stuttgart State Opera and at the Municipal Theater of Ulm. Now he appeared primarily as a concert singer. He died suddenly during a concert in Esslingen.

He began his career at the Teatro of Lonigo as Duca in ‘’Rigoletto’’. At the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma he sang in 1935 the part of Lindoro in G. Rossini’s  ‘’Italiana in Algeri’’. In 1936 he appeared at the Teatro Regio in Parma as Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’. Then in the 1936-1937 season he sang for the first time at La Scala in ‘’La Cenerentola’’ of G. Rossini and he achieved a huge success. In 1938 he sang there the part of Jean in J. Massenet’s "Le Jongleur de Notre Dame". This role he repeated also with great success in 1948 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 1947 he made guest appearance at La Scala as Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’ (opposite Lina Pagliughi in the title role), in 1948 in "Le pauvre matelot" of Darius Milhaud. In  the 1937-1939 seasons and in 1947 he sang at the Arena di Verona in his star roles: as Faust of C. Gounod, Romeo in ‘’Giulietta e Romeo’’ fby R. Zandonai, Fernando in ‘’La Favorita’’ of G. Donizetti and as faust in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of A. Boito. In 1952 he appeared in Florence in the premiere of the opera ‘’Don Chisciotte’’ of Vito Frazzi. By the end of his career he sang in 1955 at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma the part of Beppe in ‘’Pagliacci’’ (here in 1953 in the premiere of A. Lualdi’s ‘’La Luna di Cairibi’’). In 1961 he performed in Bologna as Malatestino in R. Zandonai’s ‘’Francesca da Rimini’’. In 1962 he sang for the last time at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli.

Guido Uxa (Tenor) (20. 03. 1889 - 1978)

Since 1912 he had a successful stage career as comprimario at the famous Italian operatic theaters of Turin and Palermo. In the 1921-1922 season he appeared at La Scala in Milano, among other things as Ulrich Eisslinger in "Meistersingern" and in the premiere of the opera ‘’Debora e Jaele’’ by I. Pizzetti under A. Toscanini. In 1921 he guested at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, in 1924 he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Roma in the premiere of Renzo Bianchi’s ‘’La Ghibellina’’. In 1920 he performed at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in both Buffo parts in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of A. Boito, in 1929 in the same opera house in G. Puccini’s ‘’Turandot’’. In the 1932-1933 season and in 1935 he was engaged by the Italian Opera in Holland. He was also a gifted actor.

Frederick Jagel (Tenor) (June 10, 1897, Brooklyn, New York – July 5, 1982, San Francisco, California)

He began his education with William Brady and Vincenzo Portanova in New York and concluded with Corace Cataldi-Tassoni in Milan. He made his debut in 1924 at the Teatro in Livorno under the name Federico Jeghelli as Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’. He guested at different Italian operatic stages and sang during a season at the Italian Opera in Holland. In 1927 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Here he appeared longer than twenty years (under his own name Frederick Jagel). He made his debut as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. At the Metropolitan Opera he was highly acclaimed especially as an interpreter of the Italian repertoire, however, he sang there also Wagner parts (Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan) and in 1930 the role of Gritzko in the première of M. Mussorgsky’s ‘’ The Fair at Sorochyntsi’’. His special star role counted the Herodes in ‘’Salome’’ of Richard Strauss. He appeared there in several opera premières: ‘’La notte di Zoraima’’ of Montemezzi (1931), ‘’Madonna Imperia’’ of Alfano (1928), "In the Pashas Garden" by Seymour (1935) and in ‘’Il Dibuk’’ of L. Rocca (1936).  In 1948 he sang the title role in the première of the opera ‘’Peter Grimes’’ by Benjamin Britten. In 1950 he retired from the stage. Since 1930 he guested regularly at the San Francisco Opera, in 1928 and in the 1939-1941 seasons at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1943 he appeared at the Chicago Opera in ‘’Lohengrin’’, in 1942 at the City Center Opera the Herodes. Then he lived in New York, later in San Francisco. Married the American soprano Nancy Viarini.

Emil Adami (Tenor) (Östra Nöbbelöv 1860, 8/2 -Täby, Stockholm 1938, 14/8)

After his education he made his debut in 1888 at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Piféar in ‘’Si j'étais Roi’’ of A. Adam. Till 1891 he remained engaged by this opera house and during the following ten years he made guest appearances in other theaters, primarily in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Then from 1901  to 1917 he was a member of the Stockholm Opera again. At the beginning of his career he sang mostly lyric parts like Wilhelm Meister in ‘’Mignon’’ of A. Thomas and the Roméo in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ by C. Gounod, later he took over Buffo and character roles and appeared also in operettas (Pitou in ‘’La fille de Mme Angot’’ by Lecocq, Don Ranudo in ‘’Don Caesar’’ of R. Dellinger). He made only one record.

Hans Bechstein (Tenor) (München 1872, 17/7 - München 1943, 20/2)

First he received his education as pianist as well as as an actor at the Academy of music in Munich and began his stage activity in 1893 at the Municipal Theater of Luzern as an actor. Then he appeared in Meiningen, Nuremberg and at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich (1899-1900), where he already began to appear as singer. Then he stuied singing in Munich and made his debut as singer at the  Stadttheater of Lübeck (1902-1903). Then he sang at the Hoftheater of Altenburg in Thuringia, in the 1907-1908 season at the Stadttheater of Mülhausen (Elsaß), in the 1908-1911 seasons at the Stadttheater of Bremen. He counted as one of the most significant tenors of character parts in Germany. His best part was Mime in Nibelungenring, which he sang more than 300 times at important international guest performances. He appeared as Mime in the 1907-1914 seasons at the Covent Garden in London. In 1922 he created the part of Mime during the first entire performance of the Ring Cycle at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He guested at the Hofopern in Dresden (1905) and Berlin (1909, as Mime), in Amsterdam (1908 as Steuermann in ‘’Fliegenden Holländer’’), at the Hoftheatern of Mannheim (1909) and Wiesbaden (1910), at the Teatro Real in Madrid and in 1922 at Rio de Janeiro. In 1913 he sang at the Covent Garden in the English première of the opera ‘’Colonel Chabert’’ of Waltershausen. The same year he formed in the première there of Richard Strauss’s ‘’Der Rosenkavalier’’ as Valzacchi. During the 1920’s he took part in an USA tour with appearances in Chicago and Philadelphia and was often to be heard at the Staatsoper in Munich. He also appeared as an operetta singer. He was active in Munich also in an educational area. Since 1933 he had to give up as a Jew in Germany his career.
