                                                        Don Jose in ''Carmen''

He made his debut in 1904 at Theatre Montparnasse as Gerald in ''Lakme'', but the main part of his career was devoted at the Opera Comique, where he sang Almaviva, Don Jose, Armand in Massenet's Therese, Alfredo, Jean in Massenet's ''Sapho'', Clement in Messager's ''La Basoche'', Vincent in ''Mireille'', Wilhelm in ''Mignon'', Des Grieux, Werther, Julien, Pinkerton, Cavaradossi and other roles. In 1909 he took part in the revival of Boieldieu's ''La Dame Blanche'' and he remained a paradigmatic Georges Brown. In the same 1909 he went to New York, invited by Oscar Hammerstein, to sing at the Manhattan Theatre, where he sang different roles: Ange Pitou in Lecoq's ''La Fille de Madamme Angot'', Sylvan in Maillart's ''Les Dragons de Villars''. More important, during this time he sang for the first time in his career the role of Pelleas in Debussy's masterwork. Still in America,  with Mary Garder he sang Araquil in ''La Navarraise'' and Alain in ''Griselide''. As a curious fact, Garden had appropiate the title role in Massenet's ''Le Jongleur de Notre Dame'', originally composed for a tenor. But when she was off travelling, Devries also sung this role, so the local audiences had the chance to listen to the part in both versions, soprano and tenor. Later he sang Pelleas at Covent Garden, Nicias (from Thais) in Montecarlo. And in Nice he created Paco in the world premiere of Falla's ''La Vida Breve''. e sang also as soloist in recitals and concerts, singing in St. Mattew Passion as well as in Berlioz's ''La Damnation de Faust''.

He studied with Panzetta and he made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo of Napoli in ''Rigoletto'' beside Esperanza Clasenti in a "forenoons" performance ( before accessing the regular season it was had to pass from the "forenoons" and from "the performances in suspended contract" where the manager tried various artists to engage for the regular season). He sang many times in Nord and South America closing his career around 1930. After retiring he devoted himself in teaching at the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Neaples. In 1947 was among his pupils the baritone JohnTaber Fitzgerald that debuted the year after, at the tender age of 84 years with a concert at Town Hall in New York during which he sang 16 numbers.

Dora Domar (Soprano) (Firenze 1888 - ?)

Her parents came from Spain. She worked as a girl in a fashion studio and received the first singing lessons by the pedagogue Rosina Liccioli in Florence. Her teacher drew the attention of the famous tenor Alessandro Bonci to the gifted pupil. When her parents died, Bonci took care and provided for her additional education by the pedagogues Augusto Dell'Amore, Bettinelli and Cottone. In 1907 she debuted at the theater of Valdarno near Florence in Puccini’s ‘’La Bohème’’. In 1909 she sang at La Scala the role of Amina in ‘’La Sonnambula’’ of Bellini. During the following years she appeared till 1912 in Italian provincial theaters, then she completely turned to the operetta. Her brother was the tenor Giuseppe Domar.

His real name was Mate Culic-Dragun and he was of Croatian origin. He received his education with Vezzani in Bologna. In 1911 he debuted as Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’ at the municipal theater of Rovere. During the next ten years he has appeared primarily in bigger Italian provincial stages, also in 1921 at the Arena of Milan, where he appeared as Barnaba in ‘’La Gioconda’’ of Ponchielli. In 1924 he was a member of the Italian opera in Holland. In 1923 he guested at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. About 1925 he went to North America, where he appeared at different opera societies, mostly touring companies; besides, his big roles were Conte in ‘’Trovatore’’, Posa in Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlo', Jago in ‘’Otello’’, Enrico in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, Gérard in ‘’Andrea Chénier’’, Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, Gellner in Catalani’s' ‘’La Wally’’, Alfio in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’. Last he lived as a singing teacher in San Francisco.

He was of the best known Italian Verdi baritones of the 1910’s and 1920’s. He made his debut in 1894 at the Teatro Balbo of Turinas Enrico in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’. In 1899 Albinolo appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli as Conte in ‘’Trovatore’’ and, together with his friend, the famous tenor Francesco Tamagno in ‘’Poliuto’’ of Donizetti. He also counted as a big interpreter of the baritone parts in the operas of Italian Verismo school. Thus he sang in 1902 at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele of Turinin ‘’ A Basso Porto’’ of Spinelli appearing in the role of Cicillo. In this theater he was often to be found; he also performed in several opera premieres  (‘’Il Battista’’ of Giocondo Fino (1906), ‘’Margherita d'Orleans’’ of A. Restano (1897), ‘’Suprema Via’’ of  Radeglia (1902), ‘’Dolorosa’’ of E. Sanchez  (1911)). Albinolo retired from the stage approximately in 1923.
