Oscar Kamionsky (Baritone) (Kiev 1869 - Yalta 1917)

From 1888-91 he studied at the St. Petersburg. Conservatory under Everardi, Gabel and Palechek. On the advice of A. Rubinstein  he vent to Italyto study singing with  E. Rossi. In 1892 he made his debut at the Teatro Bellini in Naples, then sang in the opera houses of  Florence (Tonio, "Pagliacci" R Leoncovallo) and the Royal Opera House in Athens. In 1893 he returned to Russia. He has performed on opera stages of Kharkiv (1893-94, 1898-99), Kiev(1894-95, 1902-04), Rostov-on-Don (1895-96), Tiflis(1896-1901) etc. In the 1904-05 he sang at the Private Opera House of Tsereteli in St. Petersburg. From 1905-08 Kamionsky appeared at the S. Zimin’s Opera House in Moscow. In 1909 he made a tour around the cities of Siberia and Japan. He retired from the stage in 1915. Kamionsky had a relatively small, but beautiful voice with fine upper register. Being master of bel canto and performing the roles of both lyrical. and dramas. character Kamiosnky called the "Russian Battistini". He appeared to more than 40 roles. As the preeminent Russian baritone of the period he took his escalated image to heart. Although he has been described as self-centered in nature, no one could doubt the brilliance and accuracy of his singing. His early death has been attributed to cancer.
