Turiddu
He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent with E. De Vos and Ch. Mirij. He became a member of the Dutch Opera Company and made his debut in Verdi's ‘’Trovatore’’ (1887, Amsterdam). Here he had big success and performed among other things in the Dutch premières of ‘’Lohengrin’’, ‘’Tannhäuser’’, ‘’Rienzi’’, ‘’Der Evangelimann’’ of W. Kienzl and ‘’Pagliacci’’ of Leoncavallo. When the Dutch Opera Company was closed in 1903, he sang in the 1904-05 season at the Théâtre de la Haye in Hague. Guest appearances followed in Berlin, Budapest, Geneva, Antwerp and Brussels. However, Pauwels soon picked up his stage career. Then he became director of the Rembrandt's-theater in Amsterdam, which passed, nevertheless, only short time. In this theatre he also appeared in different operas. Then he started to work in Amsterdam as a pedagogue and discovered among other things the voice of Louis Morrison. His wife, Sophie van Biene was a respectable Dutch actress, his son Francois Pauwels became a known lawyer and author.
