Aline Vallandri (Soprano) (Paris 1878 – Paris 1952)

She studied at the Paris Conservatory under Isnardon. She made her debut in 1904 at the Opéra-Comique, Paris in ‘’Mireille’’ of Gounod. During nearly thirty years she had in this opera house significant success. In 1906 she sang at the Opéra-Comique in the premiere of the opera ‘’Le Roi Aveugle’’ of Henri Févier. She created here several other operas (among other things in 1907 ‘’La Légende du Point d'Argenton’’ of F. Fourdrain) and became in parts like Manon, Mélisande, Micaela in ‘’Carmen’’, Ensoleilad in ‘’Chérubin’’ of Massenet, Traviata, Donna Elvira in ‘’Don Giovanni’’, Rosenn in ‘’Le Roi d'Ys’’ of Lalo, Euridice in ‘’Orpheus’’ and Mireille. The last-called part sang also in 1906 at the festival in the arena of Arles. In 1909 and 1918 she appeared at the Grand Opéra in Paris. Guest performances followed at the opera house of Monte Carlo (1907), at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels (1911), in Lisbonand Ostend as well as at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. In 1911 she sang at Covent Garden in ‘’Quo vadis?’’ of Nouguès. In 1921 she guested at the opera house of Cologneas Louise in the opera of the same name of Charpentier. In 1922 she sang this part at a guest performance in Zurich. Also as a concert soprano she had a big career.

Maria Capuana (Mezzo-Soprano) (Fano 1891 - Cagliari 1955)

She was the older sister of the conductor Franco Capuana (1894-1969). She studied song and piano play at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples andmade her debut in 1916 aty the Teatro San Carlo, Naples as Amneris in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. In 1918 she made guest appearance at the Teatro San Carlo, Naplesas Urbain in ‘’Les Huguenots’’ of Meyerbeer. In 1920 she had at the Teatro Regio in Turinbig success as Brangania in ‘’Tristan and Isolde’’. She sang the same role at the Theatre of the Champs Élysées in Paris, in Reggio Emilia (1920), in Triesteand later also at La Scala. The Brangania counted as a special star role in her repertoire as she was one of the leading Italian Wagner's interpreters. In 1922 she came to La Scala (beginning role: Ortrud in ‘’Lohengrin’’). In 1923 she sang at La Scala as Herodias in ‘’Salome’’ of R. Strauss, from 1925-27 as Fricka in ‘’Walkure’’, as Amneris in ‘’Aida’’ and as Rubria in Boito’s ‘’Nerone’’. At the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa she appeared in 1924 as Brangania, in 1936 as Ortrud in ‘’Lohengrin’’, at the Teatro San Carlo, Naplesin 1927 in ‘’Nerone’’ of Boito, in 1930 in ‘’Conchita’’ of Zandonai. In 1925 she appeared at the Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires as  Amneris, other guest performances in Barcelona, Lisbon, Cairo, South Africa, at the festival of Verona (1923 as Adalgisa, in 1926 as Rubria in ‘’Nerone’’) and in the big Italian stages. In 1926 she sang in Bergamoin the premiere of the opera ‘’Ivania’’ of Pizzi. Likewise in 1926 she guested at the Teatro Regio Parma, in 1931 and 1934 at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo. In 1931 she took part in one of the first Italytours of the traveling opera Carro di Tespi in which she appeared as Amneris in ‘’Aida’’. She also travelled around Chileand guested in 1935 in Vichy in France. In addition she was highly respected as a concert singer.

Carlo Broccardi (Tenor) (Alessandria 1886 - Milano 1953)

He was an Italian operatic tenor who had an active international career during the first third of the 20th century. He notably sang for the first complete recordings of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto (1915, the Duke of Mantua) and Giacomo Puccini's Tosca (1919, Cavaradossi); both for His Master's Voice. He also made recordings for the Fonografia Nazionale and Kalliope record labels.Broccardi studied singing in Milan with Antonio Aversa. He made his professional opera debut in 1911 at the Teatro Corso in Bologna as the title hero in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. He was soon engaged with major opera houses throughout Italy, including the Teatro Carlo Felice, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro di San Carlo, and the Teatro Regio di Torino. In 1919 he made his debut at the Teatro Costanzi in Romeas the Duke of Mantua in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. In 1922 Broccardi performed several parts opposite Toti dal Monte at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo; including the Duke of Mantua, Giuseppe Hagenbacha in Alfredo Catalani's La Wally, and Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. In 1924 he sang the role of Osaka in Pietro Mascagni's Iris at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza. In 1925 he performed the role of Enzo Grimaldo in La Gioconda at La Fenice opposite Tina Poli-Randaccio in the title role.[3] In 1926 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan and at the Liceu in Barcelona. Also that year he undertook a concert tour of Spain. He appeared as a guest artist at the Teatro Colon and other South American theatres during the 1920s. He retired from the stage sometime during the early 1930s. In 1951 he became a resident of the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti.

Probably for the first time he appeared in 1900 at the opera house of Lüttich. In 1906, after a successful guest performance, he was engaged by the court opera of Munich. In this opera house he remained till 1909. He sang in Munichin several premières; thus he sang in 1908 the role of Pelléas in the Munich première of ‘’Pelléas et Mélisande’’, in 1908 the role of Don César in ‘’Donna Diana’’ of E. N. Reznicek, in 1909 the Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. After a guest performance as José in ‘’Carmen’’ he was engaged in the 1909-10 season by  the court opera of Vienna, however, returned in 1910 again Munich. In 1913 he left Germany and guested among other things in 1913 at the Covent Garden, London. The career of the singer seems to have been soon finished afterwards, in any case, no more other appearances can be ascertained. During his appearances at  the court operas of Berlin(1910) and Dresden(1910) and in other theaters. Married to soprano Mme Buysson-Torres.

Bernardo De Muro (Tenor) (Tempio Pausanio, Sardinia 1881 – Roma 1955)

He received his education in the Accademia di Santa Cecilia of Rome under Alfredo Martino. He made his debut in 1910 at the Teatro Costanzi in Romeas Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’. after another successful appearance at the Teatro Petruzzelli of Barihe appeared already in 1912 at La Scala. There he sang in 1912 in Italian (at the same time European) première of Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’. Afterwards he had big success at La Scala in Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlo’’ and in 1912 in the première of the opera The girl of Pskov’’ of Rimsky-Korssakow together with famous Russian bass Fedor Schaljapin. Guest performances followed at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome, at the Teatro Regio, Parma, at the Teatro Dal Verme, Milan, at the Teatro Comunale, Bologna, in Naples, Turin and Trieste, in Madrid and Barcelona, in 1915 he was at the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, in 1928 in Havana, also in Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. During the 1920’s he was married to American soprano Barbara Wait and sang mostly in North America, however, only at smaller opera societies (San Carlo Company etc.). In 1933 he appeared at the New York Hippodrom in ‘’Il Trovaotre’’ and ‘’Andrea Chenier’’. During the 1930’s  he appeared regularly in Italian opera houses, thus in 1934 at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, in 1938 at the festival of the Caracalla Therme in Rome (as Folco). His finally last appearance took place in 1944 in the New York Academy of Music as Radames (with Herva Nelli as Aida). He worked after his retirement in 1943 as a pedagogue in New York, last lived, however, again in Rome. He published in 1956 an autobiography (‘’Quando ero Folco’’).

In 1921 she guested at the theatre of Sassari (Sardinia) as Margherita in Boito’s ‘’Mefistofele’’. In 1922 she sang at the Italian opera house in Holland. In 1924 she appeared at La Scala as Musetta in ‘’La Boh¨me’’; there she also performed in 1926 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Il diavolo nel campanile’’ of Lualdi. In 1925 she came to the opera house of San Francisco where she debuted in ‘’Manon’’ of Massenet and was very successful. In 1926 she created the role of  Liu in Puccini’s ‘’Turandot’’ for the opera house of Rome. The same part she sang in 1928 in the festival in the Arena di Verona. In 1926 she appeared in Covent Garden as Musetta. She had big success in the Italian provincial stages. In 1929 she sang at the Teatro San Carlo, Naplesin the premiere of the opera ‘’Don Giovanni’’ of Felice Lattuada. In 1934 she at La Scala again the role of Musetta in ‘’La Boh¨me’’ which counted as her star role. She had married in 1930 the composer and conductor Stefano Vittadini and probably retired from the stage.

Maria Luisa Fanelli (Soprano) (Chicago 1900 - ? 1988)

She been descended from an Italian family which had emigrated to North America. She studied under Adolph Mìhlmann in Chicago, then in Italy and had since 1923 a successful career in Italian opera stages. In 1923 she appeared at the Teatro Comunale, Bologna in ‘’Il Piccolo Marat’’ of Mascagni. On 7. 3. 1925 she appeared at La Scala in the premiere of the opera ‘’I Cavalieri di Ekebé’’ of Zandonai in the role of Marianne, while the remaining leading roles were sung under the direction of Toscanini by Maria Capuana, Franco Costa Lo Giudice, Benvenuto Franci and Fernando Autori. Then she sang in Parma, Bologna, Piacenza (1928 as Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’) and in 1929 at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo in ‘’Andrea Ch©nier’’ of Giordano. In 1932 she returned to Chicago, however, she appeared in North America as no more wide.

Alberto Caffo (Tenor) (Bassano del Grappa 1877 - Milano 1931)

He studied with Orefice in Paduaand Pollini in Milan. His stage debut took place at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin in 1903 as Alfredo in Verdi’s ‘’La Traviata’’. Then Caffo sang at the Teatro Comunale in Corfu(1905). He appeared also in Rome (Teatro Nazionale) and Milan(Teatro Dal Verme). During the First World War he was called up in 1917 for the Italian army and began his career again in 1919 performing at the Teatro Chiabrera of Savona. After he had been active during the 1920s as an interpreter of the heavier lyrical parts of the Italian opera primarily in provincial stages, he became a respected singing teacher. Piero Pauli, Augusta Oltrabella, Tullio Verona and the American soprano Marion Talley belong to his pupils among other things.

He made his debut approximately in 1919 at the Teatro Carcano in Milan. In the 1921-1922 season he made guest appearances in Alessandria and Cairo performing in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’ and ‘’Andrea Chenier’’. Guest appearances followed in Buenos Aires (1926-1927) and Guadalajara (1928). In Italy Borracelli sang in Rome (Teatro Costanzi), Bologna (Teatro Duse), Livorno (Politeama), Palermo (Politeama Garibaldi) and Messina (Arena Peloro). He retired from the stage approximately in 1937.
