Erik Sjøberg (Tenor) (1909, 31/10, Nexø, Bornholm - 1973 8/11 Rønne, Bornholm)




From 1932 to 1937 he studied singing under the famous tenor Vilhelm herold and he was a pupil of the Royal Opera School in Copenhagen. In 1937 he made his debut in Copenhagen as Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’ and at the same time sang also the prologue. After additional education with Holger Byrding (1938-1942) he switched from baritone to tenor end completed his studies in 1943 with Joseph Hislop in Stockholm. In 1944 he made his second debut, now as tenor, at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen as Don José in ‘’Carmen’’. Until 1962 he was a member of this famous Danish opera house, where his repertoire included Radames in ‘’Aida’’, Walther in ‘’Meistersingern’’, Pedro in ‘’Tiefland’’, Lohengrin, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’ and Peter Grimes in the opera of the same name by Benjamin Britten. He made guest appearances at the Wiener Staatsoper (1952) and at the Royal Opera in Stockholm (1954). Till 1962 he remained a member of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen.

Karl Ostertag (Tenor) (1. 10. 1903 Ulm, † 15. 12. 1979 München)




After his education under the pedagogue Anna Henneberg in Munich first he appeared in the 1928-1930 seasons at the Landestheater in Neustrelitz. Primarily he sang parts in operas of Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Strauss and by the end of his career also added to his repertoire Comprimario roles. He appeared in Munich in the premieres of the operas "Der Friedenstag" by Richard Strauss (14. 7. 1938) and "Der Mond" of Carl Orff (5. 2. 1929). Guest performances led him to the Staatsopern in Wien (1939, 1942) and Stuttgart, Salzburg festival (1943, 1944). In 1938 he made guest appearance with the Munich ensemble at  the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan. in 1956 he performed at Covent Garden in London. In addition he had a significant career as a concert singer.

Hans Lissmann (Tenor) (19. September 1885 in Hamburg; † 26. Mai 1964 in Leipzig)



Descended from a family of musicians. His father was the bass/baritone Friedrich Heinrich Lissmann (1847-1894), his mother soprano Anna Marie Lissmann-Gutzschbach (1847-1928). His sister, Eva-Katharina Lissmann (1883-?), was a respectable concert singer. He studied in Leipzig and Dresden among other things under Arthur Nikisch and then worked as a conductor at different German theaters. Then he studied singing under Raimund von Zur, then trained with Ernesto Colli in Milan and till 1913 appeared at Italian operatic stages. In 1913 he came back to Germany and after a short career at the Hamburg Volksoper, he became for many years a principal lyric tenor of the Opernhaus in Leipzig (1914-1933). There he sang among other things in the premiere of the opera ‘’Revolutionshochzeit’’ by Eugene d'Albert (1919). In 1927 he appeared in the premiere of the opera ‘’Clavigo’’ of Max Ettinger. He gave successful guest performances in leading  German theaters and was a highly respected concert singer. In Leipzig he often sang in the concerts. From 1923 to 1954 he taught singing at the conservatoire of Leipzig.

André Goavec (Tenor) (Le Havre, 18 rue du Chilou, 06 février 1897 – 06.Nice, 17 février 1947)





His father Louis Goavec was a shoemaker, his mother, Mary Josephine Augustine Demoy, was a dressmaker. He studied singing at the Conservatory of Paris under Hettich. He made his debut at the Opera-Comique in Paris on April 07, 1922 in G. Puccini’s ‘’Madam Butterfly’’ (as imperial Commissioner). Here his repertoire included the French Captain in ‘’l'Attaque du moulin’’, Ecuyer du Roy in ‘’Basoche’’, Moralès in Carmen; Simonetti in ‘’Gismonda’’, d'Azincourt in ‘’Fortunio’’, Frederick in ‘’Lakmé’’,  the Cabaret singer in ‘’Louise’’; Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’, M. De Brétigny in ‘’Manon’’, Ali in ‘’Mârouf’’, Bustamente in ‘’Navarraise’’, Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’; Eurymaque in ‘’Pénélope’’, Jahel in ‘’le Roi d'Ys’’, Tosca Spoletta/Mario Cavaradossi) in ‘’Tosca’’.

José Beckmans (Baritone) (1897, 4/1, Liège - ?)





He was a nephew of the bass-baritone Guy Beckmans (1875-1956). He received his education in Brussels and Paris. To be able to pay for his education at the conservatoire of Lüttich, he appeared in Music sound and cabarets. In 1916 stage debut in Verviers as Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’'. Later he sang with success at the Antwerpen Opera and then appeared in Nancy and Montpellier. In 1925 made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Escamillo. He sang there the part of Balthasar in the première of ‘’Le Cloître’’ by  Lévy and the Simonson in Alfano’s ‘’Risurrezione’’ (1927). In 1935 he joined to the Grand Opéra in Paris and made his debut as Rigoletto. Since 1933 several times he made guest appearances at the Opéra Monte-Carlo. In 1934 he sang there in the French première of the opera ‘’Arabella’’ by Richard Strauss (as Mandryka). At Monte Carlo his repertoire included Kurwenal in ‘’Tristan and Isolde’’ (together with Frida Leider) as well as Golo in ‘’Pelléas et Mélisande’’ by Debussy, one of his star roles. In 1935 he performed at the Opéra de Nice in the premiere of the opera ‘’Quatre-Vingt-Treize’’ of Charles Silver. The same year he guested in London (Covent Garden, as Escamillo), Rome and Buenos Aires and undertook in 1939 a France and Belgium tour with own opera troupe (José Beckmans Compagne Lyrique Franc aise). By the end of his career and after his retirement, he was a successful opera director (Paris Opéra/ Opéra Royal de Wallonie). Married the Mezzo-soprano Suzanne Duman.

Juan De Casenave (Tenor) (Madrid, Spain 1888 - Buenos Aires, Argentina 6. 12 1961)



He was born into a French-Spanish family, originally from Orthez, Pyrenaen. He studied engineering science in Germany, in addition, also music, singing and piano playing. In 1906 he came to Spain and studied singing under the famous baritone Ignacio Tabuyo. He made his debut in 1913 at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao as Almaviva in G. Rossini's ''Il Barbiere di Siviglia'' (opposite Angeles Ottein as Rosina). Here he appeared the next year as De Grieux in ‘’Manon’’. Then he sang with great success at the Teatro Madrid as lyric tenor (among other things as De Grieux in ''Manon'' and Rodolfo in ‘’La Boheme’’). He also performed at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as well as in 1923 at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. On 17.10.1923 he appeared at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid in the premiere of the Zarzuela ‘’Dona Francisquita’’ of A. Vives. The same theater he appeared in 1923 with greaty success in the Zarzuela ‘’Marina’’ of Emilio Arrieta. During the 1920’s he was one of the most popular Zarzuela singers in Spain. . Then he went to Argentina, where he continued his stage career. He appeared in Buenos Aires, (Teatro Victoria, Teatro el Mayo, La Comedia, Teatro El Nacional, Teatro Colon/in a concert), Rosario, Cordoba, La Rioja, Mexico City. His operatic repertoire included Faust in C. Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’, Rodolfo in ‘’La Boheme’’, Almaviva in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’ and Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’.

Augusta Garcia (Soprano) (France 1895 - ?)




She made her debut in 1917 and sang primarily at the leading opera houses of the French province. In 1922 she joined to the Paris Opéra-Comique. There her repertoire included Philine in ‘’Mignon’’, Mireille, Lakmé, Manon, Antonia in ‘’Les Contes d'Hoffmann’’ and Mimi in ‘’La Bohème’’. Her younger sister Olympe Garcia-Frappa was also an opera singer and she made her debut in 1923 at the Opéra-Comique as an Agnèle in ‘’Gismonda’’ of Henri Février.

Andrzej Bielecki (Tenor) (17. September 1907 in Kraków, Polen † ? 1959)




He studied jurisprudence at the university of Cracow. In 1928 he became a pupil of Boleslaw Wallek-Walewski. In 1938 he made his debut at the Opera Krakowska as Comprimario in ‘’Halka’’ of S. Moniuszko.  He continued perfecting his vocal under the pedagogue Kniagin and with Padre Bernardino Rizzi in Cracow. During the Second World War he studied in Rome under Pesci. In 1942 he was sent to a concentration camp in Isernia. He succeeded after a bomb attack on the camp and fortunately escaped. Then he was engaged as principal tenor by the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli. Here he made his debut in 1944 as Cavaradossi in G. Puccini’s ‘’Tosca’’. In April, 1944 he joined to the Polish army forces and gave numerous concerts before allied soldiers. In 1946 he undertook successful concert tour through England and Scotland. In the 1951-1952 seasons he sang at the  Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona among other things as Faust, Schuiskij in ‘’Boris Godunov’’ of M. Mussorgsky and in ‘’The tale of Tsar Saltan’’ by  N. Rimsky-Korsakov. In the 1956-1957 season he was engaged by the Stadttheater in Flensburg.

Carlos del Pozo (Baritone) (Manila, Filipinas 1885 - España, Madrid 1943)




His full name was Carlos Rodríguez del Pozo. He was a son of the governor of the capital when the country was still a Spanish colony. Probably he made his debut in 1911 at the Teatro Reale in Madrid as Wagner in C. Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’. Soon he started to sing principal baritone parts. In 1913, at the same theater, he appeared as Silvio opposite Titta Ruffo (Tonio) in R. Leoncavallo’s ‘’Pagliacci’’. In 1924 here he sang the part of Rigoletto. In 1927 at the teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid he appeared in ‘’Mignon’’ as a partner of Conchita Supervía, Roberto D'Alessio and Felipe Romito. In 1928 at the same theater he took part in ‘’Les Contes d'Hoffmann’’ along with Vicente Sempere, Matilde Revenga, Hina Spani, Pina Raymondo and Giulio Fregosi. In 1932 at the Teatro Calderón in Madrid he reached a huge success as Don Bartolo in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’ opposite Maria Espinalt, Vicente Simón, Carlo Morelli and Aníbal Vela. He retired from the stage in 1940.

Rossini's ''Il Barbiere di Siviglia''. In 1913 at Great Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus he took part  in Mozart's ''Requiem'' under Bruno Walter.

He received his education at the Conservatoire National de Paris. In 1903 he was engaged by the Paris Opéra-Comique, where he made his debut as Lothario in ‘’Mignon’’ of A. Thomas and  (possibly) remained up to the First World War. During this time he appeared there in a number of opera premieres: ‘’Aphrodite’’ of Camille Erlanger (1906), ‘’Fortunio’’ of A. Messager (as de Verbois, 1907), ‘’La Jota’’ of Raoul Laparra (1911), ‘’Macbeth’’ of Ernest Bloch ( 1910) and ‘’On ne badine pas avec l'amour’’ of Gabriel Pierné (1910). At the Opéra-Comique his repertoire included also the minister in ‘’Fidelio’’, Sulpice in ’’La Fille du régiment’’ of Donizetti, Ramon in ‘’Mireille’’ of Gounod, Jupiter in ‘’Philémon et Baucis’’ of the same composer, Bellamy in ‘’Les Dragons de Villars’’ of Maillart, Nilakantha in ‘’Lakmé’’ of Delibes, Remiggio in ‘’La Navarraise’’ of Massenet, Jahel in ‘’Le Roi d'Ys’’ of Lalo, der Bailli in ‘’Werther’’ of Massenet and the doctor in ‘’Pelléas et Mélisande’’. At the Grand Opéra in Paris he appeared only once, as Zuniga in ‘’Carmen’’ (1907). He was to be heard at the famous French provincial theaters several times as a guest. Later he worked for about thirty years as pedagogue at the Paris Conservatoire.

He graduated from his education in the singer by studies in Tŕst, Milan and Budapest. In 1912 he made his debut at the Slovenian theater of Tŕst as an eponymous hero in the opera ‘’Zrinsky’’of Ivan Zajc. In the 1918-1928 seasons he was engaged by the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb. since 1928 up to his death he was a member of the Slovenian National Theater in Ljubljana. His repertoire included Rigoletto, count di Luna in ‘’Trovatore’’, Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, Athanaël in ‘’Thaïs’’, Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’, Wotan in Nibelungenring, Amfortas in ‘’Parsifal’’ and Jochanaan in ‘’Salome’’ of R. Strauss.

Marius Jacobsen (Tenor) (14.12.1894 i Hejlskov ved Skive – 11.11.1961 i København)




First he wanted to become a painter, then, however, studied singing at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen. He made his debut in 1927 at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen as Rodolfo in ‘’La Bohème’’. Till 1956 he remained a member of this opera house and sang here among other things the Don José in ‘’Carmen’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, David in "Meistersingern" and parts in Danish operas ("Rejskameraten" of Ebbe Hamerink). In 1946 he was appointed as  Danish Royal Chamber Singer. He was also active as an operetta singer and director.

Victor Pujol (Tenor) (Paris, France 22. 04. 1894 - Paris, France 26. 10. 1987)




He made his debut in 1917 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in ‘’Marouf’’. About twenty years he remained a member of this opera house and appeared there in more than 80 parts. He appeared at the Opéra-Comique also in numerous premieres. His operatic recordings are extremely rare.

Thor Mandahl (Tenor) (Göteborg 1875, 6/1 – Stockholm 1959, 26/2)


He studied singing under J. Günther in Stockholm. In 1899 he made his debut at the Stockholm Royal Opera as Lothario in ‘’Mignon’’ of A. Thomas.  He remained a member of this opera house till 1917 . Since 1917 he worked as a concert agent and pedagogue in Stockholm. From 1899-1910 he was married the contralto Julia Jahnke-Mandahl (1873-1944), who also worked at the Royal Opera, where both took part among other things in 1910 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Arlnjot’’ of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger. A daughter, mezzo-soprano Birgit Mandal (1900-1973), who appeared in the 1925-1932 seasons again at the Royal Opera, came from this marriage.

When he was nine years old, his family emigrated to the USA. In 1894 he came back to Europe and finished there his education in Vienna. In 1896 he made his debut at the Hoftheater in Weimar. In 1898 he appeared at the Stadttheater in Zurich as king Heinrich in ‘’Lohengrin’’ and sang at this opera house till 1902. In 1902 he was engaged by the Opernhaus in Cologne and remained a member of this theater till 1909. His repertoire included Daland in ‘’Fliegenden Holländer’’, Landgraf in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Pogner in ‘’Meistersingern’’, Marke in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’, Fafner, Hunding and Hagen in Nibelungenring, Sarastro in ‘’Zauberflöte’’, Commendatore in ‘’Don Giovanni’’, Rocco in ‘’Fidelio’’, Kaspar in ‘’Freischütz’’, Cardinal in ‘’La Juive’’, Marcel in ‘’Huguenots’’, Raimondo in ’’Lucia di Lammermoor’’ and Jagu in ‘’Manru’’ of Paderewski. In the first decade of 20th century he had a huge success at the leading opera houses of Germany. He made guest appearances in Frankfurt am Main (Opernhaus 1901, 1906), Wien (Hofoper 1904), Dusseldorf (Opernhaus 1907), Berlin (Hofopern 1909) and Dresden (1909 Hofopern).
