Enrico Nani (Baritone) (Parma 1873 - Rome 1940)

Originally a student of literature, he subsequently studied singing with Antonio Cotogni and made his debut in 1899. His career covered all of Italy, including La Scala, as well as at the Teatro Colòn in Buenos Aires and in St. Petersburg. His repertoire included the principal baritone roles in scores of operas, including ‘’Tosca’’, ‘’La Gioconda’’, ‘’Otello’’, ‘’I Puritani’’, ‘’Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’’, ‘’La Dannazione di Faust’’, ‘’Siberia’’, ‘’Aida’’ and ‘’Salome’’. He was to have visited the U.S. in 1924 as leading baritone with a touring company directed by Mascagni, but the venture didn’t come to pass. Instead, Nani decided to retire.

He made his debut approximately in 1900. In 1901 he appeared at the Teatro Carignano of Torino as Rodolfo in ‘’La Boheme’’. In the 1902-1903 season Matroiani/Matrojani sang at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia. Here he performed in ‘’Rigoletto’’ and ‘’Maria di Rohan’’. Then guest appearances followed in Warsaw (1904) and Alessandria (1905). Matroiani performed also in St. Petersburg (1910) and Bucharest (1914). Probably he retired from the stage in 1915.

Angelo Santini (Tenor)

He made his debut in 1900 at the Sociale of Biella in ‘’Manon’’ and already in 1901 made guest appearances at the Teatro Nazionale of Bucharest singing in ‘’Faust’’, ‘’Rigoletto’’, ‘’La Boheme’’ and ‘’La Favorita’’. That same year, Santini also performed in the cities of Ukraine (Kharkov, Ekaterinoslav) and Russia (Rostov, St. Petersburg). In 1904 he appeared at the Politeama Genovese of Genova in Donizetti’s ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’. In 1906 he was in Ascoli Piceno, where at the Teatro Ventidio Basso he sang the role of Nadir in Bizet’s ‘’I Pescatori di Perle’’. Two years later he again appeared at the Teatro Nazionale of Bucharest, but this time as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’ and as Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. Probably his last appearance was in 1911. It happened at the Teatro Coccia of Novara, where he sang in Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’.

Ottavio Frosini (Tenor) (Lastra a Signa 1866 - Lastra a Signa 1945)

His father had a small construction company and first he worked there as an engineer, but after discovering that he had a voice, statred to study singing under the pedagogue Guglielmo Bellini. He perfected his vocal at Rome with Aristide Franceschetti.  After a few months of study, on October 21, 1894 he made his debut in concert at Circolo Sabatio in Bracciano.  He gets quite a success in front of an audience, as reported by the Chronicle:

"La fleur fleur of the country ... applauded especially the young tenor Ottavio Frosini who had to repeat three times a few pieces ...". 

He made his stage debut in 1896 at Della Fenice of Lastra a Signa in ‘’La Forza del Destino’’. Then he sang with success at the  Teatro Sociale in Bevagna as Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’. 

Chronicle about his second appearance:  "strongly Impressed the beautiful voice of tenor Frosini who had requests for bis and enthusiastic ovations". 

Then he appeared in Napoli (Teatro Mercadante, 1898), Venezia (Teatro Rossini, 1899) and Roma (Teatro Costanzi, 1900). In 1900 Frosini made guest appearance at the Teatro Princesa in Marrdi, where he performed in ‘’L’Africana’’, ‘’Carmen’’ and ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’. During his career Frosini also guested in Rio de Janeiro (1903), San Paolo (1903), San Francisco (1905), Lisbon (1906) and Alessandria (1909). Probably he retired from the stage in 1910.  He made 6 records for G&T.

She studied the piano, and later singing, in Bucharest and Milan (at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, with Vanerë Filippi and Bodrilla), making her debut as Lucia at Capodistria in 1908. After touring widely in western Europe she returned to Bucharest for performances in operetta (1910–13). Growing international fame led to her appearances at opera houses throughout Europe, notably at Barcelona, and also at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires. She made her debut as Santuzza at La Scala, where she also appeared from 1928 to1932 as Salome under Richard Strauss, as Mariola in the premiere of Ildebrando Pizzetti's Fra Gherardo (1928), and as Carmen and Charlotte (Werther). By the time she retired she had mastered a repertory of more than 90 roles, embracing mezzo, dramatic, lyric and coloratura parts in opera and operetta. In Bucharest her Cio-Cio-San, Minnie (La fanciulla del West), Kundry and Adriana Lecouvreur were especially admired. Her range, both vocal and dramatic, was exceptional, enhanced by a richly coloured timbre and an intense commitment to all her roles. After her death her memoirs Amintiri din cariera mea lirica were published (Bucharest, 1964).

Luigi Cilla (Tenor) (Rimini 1885 - ?)

After singing in Italian provincial theaters, he specialized as comprimario and became one of the most famous interpreters of the secondary roles. From 1910 to 40 he appeared in the leading Italian theaters, including Teatro La Scala in Milan and the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. There he performed on 12. 6. 1911 in the Italian premiиre of Puccini’s  ‘’La Fanciulla del West’’. In 1912 at La Scala he sang the role of Dr. Cajus in Verdi’s ‘’Falstaff’’, which he repeated also in 1914 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 1922 he perfmored at La Scala as Riccardo in Wolf-Ferrari’s ‘’I Quattro Rusteghi’’. In 1910 he guested at the Boston Opera, from 1925 to 1934 he sang regularly at Covent Covent Garden. In the 1923-24 season Cilla took part in an Australia tour. In 1926 he appeared at the Arena di Verona, in 1929 he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in the premiere of the opera ‘’Il Gobbo del Califfo’’ of  Franco Casavola.  In 1935 Cilla sang at the Maggio musicale in Florence in Pizzeti’s ‘’L'Orseolo’’. In 1944 he performed at the Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna in Puccini’s ‘’Turandot’’.

Linda Cannetti (Soprano) (Verona 1878 – Milan 1960)

She studied with Melchiorre Vidal in Vienna and made her debut at Fossombrone in Faust in 1899. Later that year she sang in Lohengrin with the tenor Francesco Bravi, whom she subsequently married. His early death brought her career to a temporary halt, but on its resumption in 1909 she achieved her greatest success to date as Chrysothemis in the Italian premiære of Elektra, at La Scala. In 1913 she appeared in another Richard Strauss premiære in Italy, that of Feuersnot, and at Turin sang the title role in the world premiære of Riccardo Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini (1914). Other notable events included commemorative performances of Boito's Mefistofele under Arturo Toscanini and a personal triumph in Buenos Aires in Italo Montemezzi's L’amore dei tre re. She retired in 1928. Her recordings show warmth of voice and emotion, with a quick, somewhat uneven vibrato, probably more acceptable then than it is now.

Cesare Alessandroni (Baritone) (Monterotondo/Roma 1870 - ?)

He made his debut in 1898 at Adriano of Rome as Barnabas in Gioconda. In 1900 he accepted the engagement in the company organised by the manager Lambardi and departed for an extended tour in various countries of Central America. He moved to the United States where his career ended opening a school for singers. Married in 1938 in Montreal, Lilian Borschneck second wedding after many years of cohabitation.

Antonio Balestro (Tenor) (Verona 1880 or 1883 - ?)

He studied in Verona with Amelia Conti Fioroni. In 1912 he was engaged by Mascagni to perform at Hyppodrome in the English premiere of ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’. Probably he close his career because of the Great War.

Luis Almodovar (Baritone) (Aspe (Alicante/Spagna 1888 - Milano 1961)

His complete name was Luis Almodovar Navarro. He studied at the Real Conservatory of Madrid and made his debut at the Teatro Gaffurio in Lodi in ‘’Andrea Chenier’’. In 1916 he appeared at the Teatro Real, Madrid in Bizet’s ‘’I Pescatori di Perle’’ with Giuseppe Anselmi. At the same theatre he sang also in ‘’Otello’’ and ‘’Rigoletto’’ with triumph. Then he moved to Milan, to perfect his style and to learn Italian repertoire. Attracted by his voice, Pietro Mascagni engaged him to sing in ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’ at the Teatro Lirico, Milan. In 1917 he appeared at Teatro Carcano, Milan in ‘’La Gioconda’’. At the Teatro Costanzi, Rome he sang with Alessandro Bonci in ‘’Un Ballo in Maschera’’. He sang also with Beniamino Gigli in ‘’Lodoletta’’. At the Teatro Communale, Cesena he appeared ‘’Lodoletta’’ with Toti Dal Monte. In 1919 Almodovar performed with great success in different Italian cities (Milan, Rome, Brescia, Genoa, Palermo). Probably in 1927 he decided to change his repertoire and begin to sing in Zarzuelas making his debut in this genre at the Teatro Tivoli, Barcelona in ‘’Por una mujer’’ of Juan Bautista Lambert. He sang with great success both in different Spanish and Latin-American cities. As the first baritone, he integrated into the «Compania Lirica Nacional», which was acting at the Teatro de la Zarzuela and also in provinces. During the 1930s his career developed principally in Spain.
