                                                              Pinkerton

He studied under Zannoni in Veronaand with Moretti in Milan. Zenatello made his debut in 1898 at the opera house of Belluno (Veneto) appearing as Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. A year later he changed in the tenor field and made his debut in 1899 at the Teatro Mercadante in Naplesin the role of the Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. He soon had big success as a heroic tenor in the leading Italian stages. Since 1902 he appeared at La Scala, where he sang the role of Faust in ‘’La Damnation de Faust’’ of Berlioz opposite Elisa Petri, Antonio Magini-Coletti and Emilio Sesona, and where he appeared 1907. He appeared at La Scala in several opera premieres: on 19. 12. 1903 as Vassili in ‘’Siberia’’ of Giordano, likewise in 1903 in ‘’Oceana’’ of Antonio Smareglia, on 29. 3. 1906 in ‘’La figlia di Jorio’’ of Alberto Franchetti opposite Angelica Pandolfini and Eugenio Giraldoni, on 15. 4. 1907 in ‘’Gloria’’ of Francesco Cilea. On 17. 2. 1904 he sang at La Scala in the unsuccessful  premiere of Puccini’s ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ performing the role of Pinkerton as a partner of Rosina Storchio; this performance ended with scandalous failure. Six months later he sang the same part in a new performance of the same opera at the Teatro Regio in Parma (now opposite Salomea Kruszelnicka as Butterfly) and  scored a great success. In 1906 he appeared at La Scala in the première of Tchaikovsky’s ‘’The Queen of Spades’’ as Hermann. Probably in 1906 he sang for the first time in Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’; in this star role he appeared many times in the big operatic stages all over the world. He counted after Francesco Tamagno (and beside Leo Slezak) as the most significant interpreter of this part generally. Guest performances in Parisand London (1905-06, 1908-09 and 1926), in Berlin and Vienna, in Moscow (1925), in Madridand Barcelonaconfirmed him as one of the leading tenors of his epoch. He achieved big success also in theatres of South America. From 1907-09 he sang at the Manhattan Opera House in New York, from 1909-17 at the Boston Opera, in the 1911-13 seasons at the Chicago Opera. In 1909 he substituted during the guest performance tour of the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera in New York the ill Enrico Caruso as Radames. In 1926 he sang again at Covent Garden in London in Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’ which was also recorded for HMV. In 1913 he had been instrumental in having the Verona Arena, built originally by the ancient Romans, restored and turned into a world famous open-air venue for operatic performances. In 1916 he appeared at the Boston Opera as Masaniello in Auber’s ‘’Muette de Portici’’. In 1913 he married to Spanish mezzp-Soprano Maria Gay (1879-1943). In the 1928-30 seasons he was to be heard at the opera house of  Philadelphia in parts like Andrea Chénier of Giordano, Don Alvaro in ‘’La forza del Destino’’, De Grieux in ‘’'Manon Lescaut’’ of Puccini and José in ‘’Carmen’’. He retired from the stage in 1934. Then he opened together with his wife a singing studio in New York. To her pupils belonged Lily Pons and Nino Martini. He was he also helped Maria Callas to appear as Gioconda in 1947 at the Arena of Verona initiating the world career of the singer. His daughter Nina Zenatello-Consolaro described his life in book ‘’Giovanni Zenatello, tenore, ideatore degli spettacoli lirici dell' arena Verona’’ (Verona, in 1976).
