Janós Halmos (Tenor) (Arad 1887 – Budapest 1961)




Basically he was an autodidact. First he was a member of choir at the Opera House of Arad. After he had been engaged first by the smaller Hungarian theatres, he became in 1928 a successor of the tenor Béla Környei at the Budapest  National Opera. Here he appeared till 1950 as the first tenor. In 1931 he took part in Budapestin the premiere of the opera ''The Mask'' of Jenö Hubay. He had significant success at guest performances at the Teatro Alla Scala, at the Opera House of Wroclaw and in Florence. His famous roles included the Pollione in Bellini's ''Norma'', José in ''Carmen'' and the Bánk Bán in the opera of the same name of  F. Erkel. Especially popularly he became by his appearance as  Kálmán in ''Hochzeit im Fasching'' of Poldini. He had a very expressive tenor voice of shining timbre. He made only four records for Gramophone.

Eduard Lichtenstein (Tenor) (Karlsbad 1889 - Hamburg 1953)

Son of the tenor Joseph Lichtenstein (1860-1912) Eduard was trained at the Stern'sches Konservatorium in Berlin under Nikolaus Rothmühl. He made his debut in 1908 at the Municipal Theatre in Hamburg as Georg in ‘’Waffenschmied’’ of Lortzing. In 1912 he appeared in Hamburgin the premiere of F. Busoni’s opera ‘’Die Brautwahl’’. He remained till 1915 in Hamburg, where he had his success as Tenor Buffo. his star role was David in ‘’Meistersingern’’ which he also sang in 1910 at the Covent Garden in London. In 1910 he studied again under Jean de Reszke in Paris. He appeared at the Gura-Sommeroper and was engaged in 1915 by the Berlin Städtische Oper. Here in 1917 he sang in operetta ‘’Der Feldprediger’’ of Millöcker with such a great success that impresario Haller engaged him in his operetta performances at Berlin. Now he turned more and more to the operetta and had in Hamburg like in Berlin a huge success as an operetta singer. Together with his friend Richard Tauber he counted as the best interpreter of the title role in Lehár’s operetta ‘’Paganini’’. He appeared in the Berlinpremieres of Walter Kollo’s Operettas ‘’Drei alte Schachteln’’ (1918), ‘’Die Vielgeliebte’’ (1919), ‘’Der Vetter aus Dingsda’’ (1921) and ‘’Die hellblauen Schwestern’’ (1925). In 1933 he had to leave as a Jew Germany. He emigrated to Hollandand became a singing teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatoire. He undertook successful concert tours at Holland, Belgium and in Switzerland. In 1950 he appeared again in operettas and also again at the concert hall; thus he gave concerts in Hamburg and in Switzerland. He suddenly died in Hamburg, one hour after a commemorative concert for his friend Richard Tauber. First he married to the singer Elisabeth Balzer, then to the actress Hilde Woerner.

Otto Briesemeister (Tenor) (Arnswalde, Neumark 1866 - Berlin 1910)




He was the son of an elementary teacher. He pursued the medicine study at the universities of Berlin, Wurzburg and Leipzig and became a medical officer. Then he studied singing under Wiedemann in Leipzig. In 1893 he made his debut at the Court Theatre of Dessau as Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’. He was married to the actress Sidonie Hönig. He lived in Berlin and been active there at the same time as a specialist for cervical suffering. When his daughter fallen ill in 1910 with a diphtheria, he got this infection in their sickbed and died also from the illness.

Raoul Girard (Tenor) (Paris 1893 - ?)


He made his debut at the Opera-Comique, Paris, in 1928 as Julien in ‘’Louise’’, and sang most of the French-Italian lyric repertory. He was married to Mlle Rainal, a ballerina of the Opera-Comique.

Franz Pácal (Tenor) (Litomyšl 1865 - Nepomuk, Pilsen 1938)

His real name was František Pacal. He was a violinist in the orchestra of the National Theatre in Praguefrom 1887 to 1892. Then, after vocal studies with Gustav Walter in Vienna, Pacal sang in choruses in Cologne, Bremen, Grazand Vienna. In 1897, he sang the small part of Ruodi in ''Guillaume Tell'' in Vienna, and immediately was made a soloist. Between 1905 and 1913, he sang succesively in Prague, Riga and Posen. During the Great War, Pacal served as a senior official in the grain office in Prague. He recorded during 1902-1908. His records are quite rare.

He was trained in his father's town Lyon and was engaged after the first appearance there in 1924 by the Opéra-Comique in Paris. He debuted here as  Hadji in ''Lakmé'' of Delibes. After appearing as comprimario  (Beppe in ''Pagliacci'', Frédéric in ''Mignon''), he was engaged in 1925 by the Paris Grand Opéra. Here he appeared since 1931 in principal roles, among other things as Duke in  ''Rigoletto'', Roméo in ''Roméo et Juliette'' of Gounod and as Radames in ''Aida''. Now also at the Opéra-Comique he took over principal roles like Rodolfo in ''Bohème'', De Grieux in ''Manon'' of Massenet, Vincent in ''Mireille'' of Gounod, Werther of Massenet, José in ''Carmen'' and Daniel in ''Le chalet'' of Adam. Till 1950 he appeared at the Grand Opéra. He gave guest performances at the Opera House of Monte Carlo and at the Opera House of Antwerp. From 1954 to 1970 he worked as a pedagogue at the conservatoire of Metz.

He studied singing under Jacques Stückgold in Berlin, later with the famous heroic tenor Heinrich Knote. In 1908 he made his debut at the Court Theatre of Detmold. In the 1909-1910 season he sang at the Municipal Theatre of Ulm, from 1910 to 1911 at the Municipal Theatre of Basel. In the 1911-1912 season he performed at the Municipal Theatre of Katowice, from 1912 to 1913 at the Municipal Theatre of Görlitz. Then he lived guesting in Berlin, however, was drawn in 1914 as a soldier in the First World War and got in Russian captivity. Only in 1919 he could take up his career again, namely first in the 1919-1922 seasons at the Dresden State Opera, then from 1922 to 1927 at the Municipal Theatre of Chemnitz in which he appeared in 1925 in the premiere of the Wilhelm Kienzl’s opera ‘’Hassan der Schwärmer’’. In 1927-1930 seasons he was active at the Opera House of Leipzig; here he sang in 1928 in the premiere of the Hans Hermann Wetzler’s opera ‘’Die baskische Venus’’. Then he appeared at Berlin. In the 1933-1934 season he sang at the Municipal Theatre in Dortmundand from 1934 to 1935 at the Municipal Theatre in Augsburg. Then he again appeared at Berlin, where he led later an artist's agency. He appeared during his career as a guest among other things at the Berlin State Opera, Dresden and Vienna (1927).

Bernhard Bötel (Tenor) ( Hamburg 1883 - ? 1953)




His father was the famous tenor Heinrich Bötel (1854-1938); studied singing with Mathieu Lorent in Hamburg, later under Ernst Grenzebach in Berlin. He debuted in 1905 at the Municipal Theatre of Aachen as Lancelot in the operetta ''La Poupée'' of Audran. Then he joined to the Komische Oper, where he had his great success as Hoffmann in ''Hoffmanns Erzählungen''. He remained four years in Berlinand sang in this time also Buffo roles. In 1907 he appeared with the ensemble of the Komische Oper in  London Adelphi Theatre in the English première of ''Hoffmanns Erzählungen'' as comprimario. Later he had in Vienna a significant career as an operetta singer, first at the Opera House in Vienna, then in the 1912-1914 at the Raimund Theatre in Vienna. He took part on 17. 11. 1909 in the premiere of F. Lehár's operetta ''Der Graf von Luxemburg'' at the Opera House in Vienna. In the 1914-1915 season he was active at the Municipal Theatre of  Halle/Saale. Then he worked again in Berlin and was during of 1920's as a Tenor-Buffo a respected member of the BerlinUrban Opera. At the same time he appeared as an operetta singer and was celebrated as a partner of famous diva Fritzi Massary. In the 1928-1931 seasons he appeared at the  Berlin Kroll Opera. In 1935 he retired from the stage.

In the 1930s, he was among the first singers to gain popularity through radio appearances; at this time, he was more and more specializing in operetta.

Erik Enderlein (Tenor) (Dresden 1887 - ?)




One of the most important German heldentenors; unfortunately, the records he left are few and scarce. Born February 18th, 1887, in Dresden; from 1912 on, he sang at the Dresden Opera as a lyrical tenor. In 1918, he moved on to Schwerin, now as a heldentenor, and in 1919 to Hamburg. In 1926, he became a member of the Städtische Oper Berlin. Successful guest appearances in Rome, Vienna, at the Bayreuthand Zoppot festivals. After his career, he lived as a teacher in Berlin. On his death, nothing seems to be known. He also appears as Emil Enderlein.

Benno Haberl (Tenor) (Wien 1875 - Weimar 1942)



He began his stage career in 1909 at the Court Theatre in Weimar and remained there until his retirement (1932). He appeared in Weimar in different opera premieres. Here he sang among other things in the premieres of R. Wagner’s ‘’Parsifal’’ and ‘’Ariadne auf Naxos’’ of  R. Strauss. Also performed there in the premiere of the opera ‘’Hirtenlegende’’ of Eugene Bodart (19. 12. 1930). He was famous in the Central Germany as a concert and oratorios singer. Later began work as a vocal pedagogue in Weimar.

His voice was discovered by Cosima Wagner and was trained at the Bayreuth school by Julius Kniese. He made his debut in 1904 at the Bayreuth Festival as Froh in ''Rheingold''. In 1906 and 1908 he appeared with great success at Bayreuth as Parsifal. First he sang at the Court Theatre in Coburg, then from 1910 to 1918 at the Municipal Theatre in Bremen, in the 1918-1920 seasons at the Municipal Theatre of Graz, from 1921 to 1926 at the Municipal Theatre of Freiburg i. Br. and since 1927 at the Opera House in Kaiserslautern. In 1910 he was active temporarily at the Dresden Court Opera. After his retirement he led from 1933 to 1944 the Mecklenburg Land Theatre in Schwerin. There he  still performed occasionally, among other things as Loge in ''Rheingold''

He made his debut in 1912 at the Opera House in Hamburg as Florestan in ‘’Fidelio’’ and remained up to the end of his stage career a member of this opera house. Here he appeared on 2. 11. 1920 in the premiere of the Clemens von Franckenstein's opera ‘’Li-Tai-Pe’’ (‘’Des Kaisers Dichter’’)  and on 7.10.1927  in the premiere of the opera ‘’Das Wunder der Heliane’’ of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. In 1926 at Hamburghe sang with great success in G. Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlo’’. He made guest appearances at the Städtischen Oper Berlin, in 1924 and 1927 at the Wien  Staatsoper,in 1926 at the Opera House in Hague as Max in ‘’Freischütz’’. During the Second World War he still appeared on the stage; then worked as a vocal pedagogue at Hamburg.

As a child he came to Chicopee, Massachusetts, where he sang in a church choir. He studied in Italyand debuted in 1914 at the Teatro Adriano in Rome in Donizetti’s ‘’Poliuto’’. Still in the same year he made guest appearance in Moscow. Guest performances followed in Budapest, Vienna and in Italian opera stages. In 1917 he joined to the Chicago Opera (debuted as Xalca in the premiere of the opera ‘’Azora’’ of Hadley). In 1918 he sang at the Chicago Opera in the premiere of Arthur Nevin’s ‘’A Daughter of the Forest’’. During the long years of his affiliation to the Chicago Opera he sang there parts like the Rodolfo in ‘’Bohème’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Radames in ‘’Aida’’, Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Dimitri in ‘’Boris Godunov’’, Pedro in ‘’Tiefland’’ of E. d'Albert (1926) and Folco in Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’, since 1922 he also appeared in  R. Wagner’s operas like ‘’Die Walkure’’ and ‘’Tannhäuser’’. In 1921 he had at the Chicago Opera in which he remained active till 1930 one of his biggest success in ‘’I Gioielli della Madonna’’ of E.Wolf Ferrari with Rose Raisa as a partner. After 1930 he still guested at the Cincinnati Zoo Theatre; then he worked as a pedagogue in Chicago.

Maria Roggero (Soprano) (Torino 1886 - ?)



She studied singing under Francolucci in Turin, then with  Sangiorgi in Milan. She appeared first as a concert singer. In 1909 her stage debut took place at Vicenza in ''Mignon'' of  A. Thomas. During the same year she again appeared as Mignon, but this time at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo. In 1909 she also guested with great success at the Teatro Regio of Turin, where she performed in 1910 in the Italian première of ''Salome'' of Richard Strauss. Till 1925 she was to be found over and over again in Turin. In  the summer of 1909 she sang at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires the role of Nedda in ''Pagliacci'' as a partner of Enrico Caruso and Mario Sammarco; also in 1913 and 1915 she appeared at the Teatro Colón, among other things as Micaela in ''Carmen''. In 1911 she made guest appearance at the Teatro Politeama in Genova in the title role of Puccini's ''Manon Lescaut''. At the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan like at the Covent Garden in Londonshe was successful as  Mimi in ''Bohème''. She gave guest performances and concerts in France, Spain, Portugaland in South America, appearing in in Cuba, Peru and Santiago de Chile (1917). In 1913 she sang at the Opera House of Rio de Janeiro as Sieglinde in ''Die Walkure'', Micaela in ''Carmen'',  Nedda in ''Pagliacci'' and Marguerite in '''Damnation de Faust'' of Gounod. In 1915 she appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in the part of Minnie in ''Fanciulla del West'' of Puccini, in 1920 as  Maddalena in ''Andrea Chénier'' of Giordano, one of her star roles which she also reported in 1917 at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. In 1920 sang at the Teatro Eliseo in Barcelona, in 1922 at the Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari. In 1924 she performed at  the Opera House of Lyon (as  Francesca da Rimini of Zandonai), in 1931 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. Her career at the famous Italian provincial stages lasted till 1935. After her retirement she worked at the Liceo Musicale in Como. She is not to be mistaken with the American Mezzo-soprano Margaret Roggero.
