Konrad von Zawilowski (Baritone) (Kraków 1880 - ? 1958)



He began his musical education in his native country, then went to Vienna and finally studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Londonunder Battison Haynes. In Viennahe studied among other things under Guido Adler. He made his debut in concert at Lviv. He made his operatic debut in 1903 at the Opera House of Warsaw as Wotan in ‘’Die Walkure’’. In  the 1903-04 season he was a member of the Opera House of Lviv. From 1904 to 1907 he was engaged as the first baritone by the Vienna Court Opera, In the 1907-1908 season he appeared again at the Opera House of Warsaw. He guested in Parisand Milan and was engaged in the 1911-1913 by the Berlin Kurfürstenoper. Here he performed on 23. 12. 1911 in the premiere of the opera ‘’I gioielli della Madonna’’ of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari in the part of the Raffaele. He guested in the 1909-1911 season at the Opera House of Dusseldorf, in 1910 at the Berlin Court Opera, in 1911 at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen, in 1912 at the Municipal Theatre of Bremen. At the same time he was a highly respected concert singer. Already during his work in Berlin he was known as a pedagogue. After the First World War he moved his activity to England. He appeared there still as a concert singer, became internationally famous, however, above all as a singing teacher. He developed a special educational teaching system in London. Then he went as a pedagogue to North America, where he trained again numerous singers. In 1918 he published a textbook ‘’The Practical Psychology of Voice and Life’’. As a composer he published vocal works and orchestra works, several song cycles and single songs.

Luisa Tosi Ardizzoni (Soprano) (Cento 1882 - ?)



She studied singing at the Conservatory Rossini in Bologna under the pedagogue Bossi. In 1907 she made her debut at the Teatro Comunale of Castelfiorentino as Mimi in G. Puccini’s ‘’Boheme’’. After her retirement she opened a singing school in Boston.

His real name was Josip Rijavec. First he studied in Görz and Ljubljana, then in Vienna among other things under Franz Schreker and H. Graedener. He made his debut in 1916 at the Opera House of Zagreb in which he remained till 1926. He sang during this time as a guest at the opera houses of Belgrade and Ljubljana (Ljubljana). In 1926 he gmade guest appearance in Berlin and was engaged in the 1928-32 seasons by the Städtischen Oper Berlin. Guest performances led him in the 1931-32 season to the Vienna State Opera. Since 1931 with great success he was to be heard regularly at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Here he sang in 1931 the title role in the première of  I. Stravinsky's ''Oedipus Rex''. From 1932 to 1937 he belonged to the German Theatre in Prague, where he had one of his big success as Manrico in G. Verdi's ''Trovatore''. He made guest appearances at the Dresden State Opera (1927) and at the National Theatre of Prague (1929). As a concert singer he appeared among other things in Paris(1929), Hamburg (1936, 1937), Copenhagen(1932), and Budapest. In 1937 he returned in his native country, where he appeared more ten years at the opera houses of Zagreb, Belgrade and Ljubljana. Since 1948 he was a professor of the Belgrade Music Academy. His son Mario Rijavec became known as a conductor. His tenor was effective above all in the Italian repertoire.

Ester Adaberto (Soprano) (Naples 1872 - Milan 1951)





Her real name was Ester Nunez de Arce. At the age of two she moved with her family to Milan. She studied singing under Emma Dotti and, in 1897, after after participating in some recitals in Milan, she made her debut at the Teatro Nuovo of Mirandola in R. Leoncavallo’s ‘’Pagliacci’’. She developed her career mostly in foreign countries. She spent some years as a member of the the Castellano Opera Company active in East Europe. Later, around 1905, she moved to USA, where, after a long and successful career, she retired from the stage as a result of the death of her so, who died during the First World War.  She made only three records.

Between the  two World Wars he had in Italy a significant career. He was one of the best interpreters of the tenor parts in Pietro Mascagni’s operas. Tcomposer himself selected him to appear at the Teatro Alla Scala in his operas ‘’Guglielmo Ratcliff’’ (1932)  and  ‘’Iris’’ (1936). He sang in this opera house also in 1932 the role of Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and in 1935 the Rinuccio in ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’ of Giacomo Puccini. In Italyhe appeared with success in different provincial stages. In 1932 he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, in 1933 at the Opera House of Rome in the premiere of ‘’La farsa amorosa’’ of Riccardo Zandonai, in 1940 at the Teatro Alla Scala in ‘’Ghirlino’’ of Luigi Ferrari-Trecate. At the Opera House of Rome he performed in 1935 in ‘’La Bohème’’. In 1938 during the festival in the Terme di Caracallahe appeared as Folco in Pietro Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’, at the Opera House of Piacenza in 1936 he sang in Umberto Giordano’s ‘’Andrea Chenier’’, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naplesin ‘’'Pinotta’’ of Mascagni. After his retirement he lived as a singing teacher in Milan. He never made records.

He made his debut as baritone at the Teatro Verdi of Bologna in the role of  Riccardo in Bellini's ''I Puritani'' (1914). In 1920 he was to be heard at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan as Marcello in Puccini's ''La Bohème'' and as Amonasro in ''Aida''. In 1922 he performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli in the premiere of the opera ''La Flaminga'' of Donaudy. In 1924 he sang at the Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari in the operas ''Il Piccolo Marat'' of Mascagni and ''Dejanice'' of Catalani. In 1925 he guested in Berlin, Budapest and Prague appearing as Rigoletto. In 1927 at the Teatro Nuovo in Copenaghen he sang the role of Figaro in  ''Barbiere di Siviglia''. In 1929 he made guest appearances in Valencia, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Barcelona. In 1930 he sang  at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. Then he changed to tenor and for the first time appeared in 1933 at the Teatro Puccini in Milan as Dick Johnson in ''La Fanciulla del West'' of Puccini, then he sang at the Metropolitan Opera the role of Radames in Verdi's ''Aida''. In the same season he sang there Canio in ''Pagliacci'' and Turiddu in ''Cavalleria Rusticana'' with Rose Ponselle as a Santuzza. In 1935 at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste he sang the roile of Ägisth in ''Elektra''. Especially he was famous for his interpretation of  Otello in Verdi's opera of the same name, which he sang among other things in Naples, Palermo and Catania. In 1942 he sang  for the last time at the Teatro Politeama of Viareggio the role of Canio in ''Pagliacci'' and then went to his birthplace San Giuliano Terme. He made only one record.

Marcelle Demougeot (Soprano) (Dijon 1876 - Paris 1931)




Her real name was Jeanne Marguerite Marcelle Decorne. She studied singing under Charles Laurent at Dijon and at the Conservatoire of Paris by Hettich. In Parisshe was also a student of Mangin, and Warot Giraudet. She made her debut in 1902 at the Paris Grand Opera as Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni”. In 1904 she sang here in the premiere of “Le fils de l’étoile” by Camille Erlanger, two years later in Massenet’s “Ariane”, 1911, in Monte Carlo, the title role in the world premiere of the opera “Déjanire” by Saint-Saens. In 1909 she appeared at the Grand Opera in the premiere of Wagner’s “Rheingold” in the role of Fricka. In 1914 she performed at the same opera house in the premiere of “Parsifal” as Kundry. She performed in the 1907-09 seasons at the provincial theaters and later at Nice, Bordeaux, Lyon and Vichy. In 1921 she sang at the Grand Opera with great successful in ”Die Walkure’’. In 1930 she sang in Strasbourg the role of Brünnhilde in the Ring cycle. She was considered the most important French Wagnerian soprano of her generation, and outside of the Wagner repertoire, she sang roles such as Aida, the Valentine in “Les Huguenots” by Meyerbeer, the Mathilde in Rossini’s “William Tell”, the Cyria in “Angela” by Massenet and Marguerite in “La Damnation de Faust” by Berlioz.

Marie Lafargue (Soprano) (Bayonne 1871- ? 1913)




She studied at the Paris Conservatory and made her debut in ‘’Otello’’ (Desdemona) on 19 April 1895 at the Paris Opera. She remained at the Paris Opera until 1899 and sang Aida, Donna Anna, and Valentine. In 1903 she sang in ‘’Faust’’ (Marguerite) at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt. She made her Opéra-Comique debut in the title role in ‘’Carmen’’ (4 June 1905) and remained at the Opéra-Comique until 1912, singing in ‘’Werther’’, ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’, ‘’Les contes d'Hoffman’’, ‘’La Navarraise’’, and ‘’Tosca’’. In addition to her Paris performances, Lafargue sang in many of the major French provincial houses as well as in Brussels, Buenos Aires, and Cairo. She died at the height of her career.

From 1897 to 1900 Oreshkevich studied in St. Petersburg under F. I. Gushchin. He made his debut in 1900 in Tbilisi. From 1901 to 1904 he was a soloist of the St. Petersburg’ Mariinsky Theatre, where he made his debut as Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s ‘’Eugene Onegin’’. From 1904 to 1906 he sang in Warsaw. From 1907 to 1913  and from 1915 to 1915 Oreshkevich appeared at the National Opera House in Kiev. He also performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (1913-1915). In 1902 and 1904 he made guest appearances at the opera house Olimpia in St. Petersburg and also sang at the opera house of Solodovnikov (1909). Since 1920’s he worked as a  pedagogue in conservatory of Kiev. Oreshkevich’s records are extremely rare.

Giuseppe Reschiglian (Tenor) (Padova 1875 - Amsterdam 1949)

He began his career as an oratorios and churches singer. He made his debut in 1895 at Sociale of Pordenone in ‘’Ruy Blas’’. He appeared as a lyric tenor in the leading Italian theaters and sang parts like the Nemorino in ‘’Elisir d'amore’’, Alfredo in ‘’ Traviata’’, Ernesto in ‘’ Don Pasquale’’ and Elvino in Bellini’s ‘’Sonnambula’’. In 1915 he was engaged by the Italian opera company to appear in Holland. Together with the soprano Margherita Bevignani and the baritone Luigi Mazzoleni he decided to remain there, because of the insecurity of the war relations. Three artists put together an opera troupe with which they organized opera performances in 1918 at the the Theatre Carré,Amsterdam. Famous conductor Willem Mengelberg allowed  him to sing the part  of tenor-solo in Verdi's Requiem. After the First World War he continued his career in Italy. By the invitation of his brother Vincenzo Reschiglian (1874-1955), who was engaged for decades as a Comprimario at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, he came to USA and sang there first as a mamber of the San Carlo Opera Company, then at the opera house of Philadelphia (1925-29). In 1938 he moved his activity again to Holland and now worked as a pedagogue in Amsterdam. Still in 1941 he gave in the Dutch broadcasting company a concert with modern Italian songs.

Paolo Ananian (Bass) (? 1880 - ?)




Probably he made his debut in 1905 at the Opera House of Monte Carlo as Don Diego in G. Meyerbeer’s ‘’Africaine’’. He appeared there in the 1905-1908 seasons and also took part in the guest performance of the ensemble of this opera house in Berlin(1907). In 1908 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in  New York in which as a beginning role he sang Wagner in C. Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’. He was active in this opera house first till 1910, then again in the 1911-1915 seasons and, in the end, from 1918 up to his retirement as Hermann Ortel in the ‘’Meistersingers’’ (1935). He sang at the Opera House of Monte Carlo in the premieres of the operas ‘’Thérèse’’ of J. Massenet (1907) and ‘’Theodora’’ of Xavier Leroux (1907). At the Metropolitan Opera he sang in the premieres of Puccini’s ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’ (1918 as Betto di Signa), ‘’L'Oiseau blue’’ of A. Wolff (1919) and ‘’The King's Henchman’’ of D. Taylor (1927), in addition he appeared in the USA premières of ‘’Le Donne curiose’’ of Wolf-Ferrari (1912), ‘’Lobetanz’’ of L. Thuille (1911), ‘’Julien’’ of G. Charpentier (1914), ‘’La pure Fiammette’’ of X. Leroux (1919) and ‘’Fra Gherardo’’  of I. Pizzetti (1929). In 1910 he made guest appearance at the Grand Opéra in Parisas Melot in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’. in the 1923-24 season he sang at the Opera House of San Francisco. In 1921 he belonged to the opera troupe put together by Antonio Scotti which undertook a tour through the USAand Canada.

Magda Dorini (Soprano)



She studied singing under the famous soprano Elena Theodorini and made her debut in 1908 at the Teatro Sociale of Voghera as Desdemona in ‘’Otello’’. She retired from the stage in 1922 when she married to Giacomo Trombetta.

Paul-Henri Vergnes (Tenor) (Lagrasse 1905 – Paris 1974)



He was discovered by the patron Castellan de Beauxhoste and studied singing from 1924 to 1928 at the the Paris Conservatoire. In 1929 he made his debut at the Paris Grand Opéra in ‘’Faust’’. Here he unfolded a significant career. In 1929 he sang in a whole performance of the opera ‘’Les Troyens’’ of H. Berlioz in the part of the Jopas. Since 1933 he also belonged to the ensemble of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where as a beginning role he appeared as  Hoffmann in ‘’Hoffmanns Erzählungen’’. In this role he also had in Amsterdamunder Pierre Monteux a huge success (1932). At the Opéra-Comique he performed in 1938 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Esther de Carpentras’’ of D. Milhaud. Later he worked as a vocal pedagogue in Paris. He was married the singer Lise Dalignan.

Ernest Tilkin-Servais (Baritone) (Bruxelles 1888 - ? 1961)

His real name was Ernest Servais. His family came from Lüttich. He was a violinist before becoming a singer, however, he was also a gifted sculptor and graduated from the Académie des Beaux Arts in Brüssel. Then he became at the conservatoire of Brusselsa pupil of the pedagogue Desiré Demest. Since 1910 he appeared as a concert singer and very early travelled around France, Holland, Spain, Portugal and Brazil. In 1913 for the first time he sang at the Opera House of Lyon. During the First World War he appeared in Brusselsat the Trocadéro and at the Théâtre de la Bourse. In 1918 he was engaged by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brusselsand remained as the first baritone for the following ten years. Here in 1919 he sang the role of Ali in the première of the opera ''Marouf'' of Rabaud. In 1926 he made guest appearance at the Covent Garden; there he sang as a partner of Maria Jeritza in ''Thaïs'' of Massenet and, in addition, the Grand-prêtre in ''Samson et Dalila'' of Saint-Saëns. At Monte Carlo he created on 13. 2. 1926 the role of Holofernes in the premiere of the opera ''Judith'' of Honegger. Several times he made guest appearances at Holland, where he performed in ''Rigoletto'' and ''Trovatore''. He retired early after the death of his only son and became a pedagogue at Brussels
