Nino Perya (Tenor) (Palermo 1878 - ?)



He studied singing at Palermounder the teacher Cairone and in Milanwith the pedagogue Pintorno. In 1901 he made his debut at the Teatro Politeama Grà of Alessandriain G. Verdi’s ‘’Traviata’’.

Tina Farelli (Mezzo-Soprano) (Firenze 1879 - ?)



She made her debut as mezzo-soprano, but after additional vocal studies under the pedagogue Serafino De Falco she made her second debut as soprano in 1902 at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza in ‘’Ballo in Maschera’’. She married to conductor Bovi and after her retirement opened in Havana the school of song "Accademia Filarmonica Italiana". She settled in Cuba, where her school was actived still  in 1930.

She studied singing at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna under Umberto Masetti and Alessandro Busi. She made her debut in 1897 at the Teatro Nazionale of Rome in P. Mascagni’s ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’. In 1898 she sang at the Teatro Filodrammatici in Milan in the world premiere of the opera ‘’Mal d'Amore’’ of E. Mascheroni. She retired from the stage in 1931.

Maria Santoliva Villani (Soprano) (1875 - 1948)



After finishing her education she had her first success in guest performances at the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi in Palermo, at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples, at the Teatro Della Pergola in Firenze and at the Teatro Coccia in Novara. In Livorno she sang in A. Ponchielli’s  ‘’Gioconda’’. In 1905 she made guest appearance at the Opera House of Odessa in  ‘’Trovatore’’ and ‘’Ugonotti’’. In 1908 she appeared at the Polietama Rossini in Tunis. In Spain she sang at the Teatro Principal of Valencia. In 1909 she sang at the Teatro Bellini in Naples; in 1910, with an Italian opera troupe, to which also belonged the famous baritone Mattia Battistini, she performed in Bucharest. She was married the bass-baritone Roberto Villani, who belonged to the Italian singer's family Villani. Her daughter Renata Villani was a known soprano. She retired from the stage in 1924.

Antonio Gelli (Bass) (Ravenna 1897 - Milano 1960)



He made the debut as baritone, but soon sang buffo roles. In 1933 he made guest appearance at the Covent Garden in London as Sagrestano in ‘’Tosca’’ of Puccini. After the retirement he devoted himself to the teaching.

He was of French origins. First he graduated in medicine and then studied singing. He made his debut in the early 1900s at Paris in ‘’Traviata’’ and ‘’Carmen’’. After successful appearances he was engaged by the Opera House of Nice to sing in ‘’Otello’’ and ‘’Dolores’’ of  T. Breton. In 1904 he went to Italy to perform at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in ‘’La dannazione di Faust’’ and ‘’Siberia’’. In 1910 he appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Wotan in ‘’Walkiria’’. He was a great friend of the French dramatist Victorien Sardou. His wife was the famous soprano Amelie Talexis.

Carlo Scattola (Bass) (Vicenza 1878 - Milano 1947)



About the beginnings of his career is known a little, but probably he made his debut in 1899 at the Teatro Rossini of Venice in ‘’Carmen’’. In 1912 he appeared at the Teatro alla Scala in Mascagin’s ‘’Isabeau’’. After the First World War he began the second career as Bass-Buffo, which was very successful. In 1922 he again sang at the Teatro alla Scala, but this time in ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’. Here in 1934 he performed in the premiere of Lodovico Rocca’s ‘’Il Dibuk’’. Already in 1927 he took part at the Teatro Torino in Torino in the premiere of the opera ‘’Madonna Imperia’’ of Franco Alfano. In 1926 he sang opposite Conchita Supervia at the Teatro Argentina in Romeas Taddeo in ‘’L'Italiana in Algeri’’. In 1938 he sang at the Arena di Verona in Puccini’s ‘’Boheme’’. He also appeared in opera performances of the Italian broadcasting company EIAR. He retired from the stage in 1946.

Giovanni Bardi (Bass) (Cagliari 1878? - Havana 1918)


He studied singing at Milanunder Carlo Schneider and made his debut in 1905 at the Teatro Sociale of Monza as Angelotti in ''Tosca''. He had a successful career at the famous opera houses in the Italian province. In 1911 he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Romeas Ramphis in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. In 1914 he again appeared there as Baldassare in ''Favorita'' of Donizetti, Cieco in Mascagni's ''Iris'' and Aldobrandini in ''Parisina'' of the same composer. In the 1905-06 he appeared at Piacenza in the Italian première of the opera ''Nadeya'' of Rossi and as Colline in ''Boheme''. In the 1907-1908 season he was to be heard at the Teatro Regio in Parma, where he sang in ''Rose Rosse''  of Brizzi and in Mascagni's opera ''Amica'' (opposite Tina Poli-Randaccio and Emanuele Ischierdo). In the 1916-18 seasons he was engaged by the Teatro Nazionale of Havana.

Amleto Galli (Bass) (Bologna 1886 - Milano 1949)


First he became an apprentice to a shoemaker, then an engraver. After his voice had been discovered, he visited only five months the conservatoire of Bolognaand he was also practically an autodidact. He was a very many-sided gifted artist, beside his career as a singer he showed substantial talents as a painter and sculptor and dealt with the astronomy. Probably he made his debut in 1905 and sang first at the smaller Italian stages. In the 1911-12 season he was to be heard at the Teatro alla Scala in the classical opera ‘’Armida’’ of Gluck. In 1914 he performed there in the premiere of the opera ‘’L'Ombra di Don Giovanni’’ of F. Alfano. In 1922 he took part at the Teatro alla Scala in the premiere of I. Pizzetti’s opera ‘’Debora e Jaele’’. One of his brilliant achievements was the role of Lunardo in ‘’Quattro rusteghi’’ of Wolf-Ferrari. In 1936 he sang with great success at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in the premiere of the opera ‘’Giulio Cesare’’ by G. Fr. Malipiero.

He appeared with success at different opera houses of Spain, Italy and South America, especially at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, where he sang between 1913 and 1932, sharing roles with tenors Hipolito Lázaro and Bernardo de Muro. He retired from the stage in 1932 after performing  in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ at the Teatro Liceo of Barcelona. He made two records for Gramophone.
