Max Bloch (Mario Brefelli) (Tenor) (Germany 1882 - New York 1943)




He studied under Frau Pockal in Berlin and made his debut in 1910 at Komischen Oper of Berlin, in the 1911-12 season he appeared at Kurfürstenoper of  Berlin and then was engaged in the 1912-14 seasons by the Deutschen Opernhaus in Berlin. Since 1914 he was a member of the  Metropolitan Opera in New York (beginning role: Majordomo in ‘’Rosenkavalier’’), to which he belonged till 1918 and then again from 1922 to 1930. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera not only Tenor-Buffo and Comprimario roles; but also David in ‘’Meistersingers’’ and the Mime in ‘’Siegfried’’ (his star roles). He appeared at the Metropolitan Opera also in the premieres of the operas ‘’Madame Sans-Gêne’’ of Giordano (25. 1. 1915), ‘’Goyescas’’ of Granados (28. 1. 1916) and  ‘’The Canterbury Pilgrims’’ of de Koven (1917). He retired from the stage in 1930. He was also a respectable concert singer.

She debuted in 1915 at Stadttheater of Hamburg, whose member she remained till 1918. In the 1918-19 season she was engaged by the Wiener Staatsoper, but she sang again in the 1920-21 season at the Hamburger Oper and remained a member of this opera house till 1931. Here in 1921 she sang the title role in the German première of Puccini’s ‘’Suor Angelica’’. She made guest appearance in 1922 at the Teatro Costanzi in Roma in the title role in Puccini’s ‘’La Bohème’’. in 1930 she sang at the Théâtre Pigalle in Paris. In 1931 she performed at Covent Garden in ‘’Fledermaus’’ (as Rosalinde). In 1928 and 1930 she appeared in Amsterdam. In the 1928-29 season she perfomed at La Scala, from 1931 to 1938 several times she sang at the Wiener Staatsoper. In 1927 she guested at Staatsoper Dresden. In 1930 she appeared at the Opéra-Comique in Paris (as Mimi). She sang also in Berlin and Munich. In 1930 she gave a recital inCopenhagen. In 1933 she forced to leave Germany and emigrated with her family to Austria, from there she went to Italy where they remained until after the war, at which time she emigrated toArgentina, where she ended her days. She worked as a pedagogue in Buenos Aires. After a marriage she sang under the name Rose Ader-Trigona.

Vilém (Wilhelm) Zitek (Bass) (Praha 1890 – Praha 1956)

First he studied singing at the Conservatoire Pivoda in Prague, then in Milan under G. Binettiho. In 1911 he made his deubt at the National Theatre in Pragueand remained up to the end of his career a member of this opera house. In 1914 he had a sensational success as Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s ‘’Eugene Onegin’’ and from this performance up to his retirement from the stage in 1947, he was one of the most significant Czech singers of his epoch, equally prominent in the Czech, Russian, Italian and German repertoire. On 23. 4. 1920 he appeared at the  National Theatre in the premiere of Leoš Janáček’s opera ‘’Výlety pana Broučka’’. Guest performances with significant success brought him also abroad: In 1926 he appeared at the Teatro Regio of Turin.  In the 1928-29 season he sang at Berlin. In 1933 he performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Arturo Toscanini engaged him for the Teatro alla Scala. Here he sang in the 1926-27 season the roles of Fasolt and Hunding in Wagner’s ‘’Nibelungenring’’, from 1929 to 1931 he appeared as Gessler in ‘’Guglielmo Tell’’ of Rossini, the Commendatore in Mozart’s ‘’Don Giovanni’’, the Fafner and Hunding. In 1928 he made guest appearances at Paris under Bruno Walter singing the Mozart's parts. In 1936 he again appeared at the Grand Opéra as Commendatore in Mozart’s ‘’Don Giovanni’’. In 1946 he became the National Artist  and at this time he counted as the biggest living Czech singer. He made 6 records for Parlophon (1927).

Already in 1874 she sang at the Alhambra Theatre in Brusselsin Lecocq’s operetta ‘’Giroflé-Girofla’’. Her debut as an opera singer occurred in 1879 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brusselsin ‘’Mignon’’ of Thomas. In Brusselsshe appeared on 19. 12. 1881 in the premiere of Massenet’s ‘’Hérodiade’’ in the title role. On 7. 1. 1884 she sang at the same opera house in the premiere of Reyer’s opera ‘’Sigurd’’ in the part of  Uta. Then she joined to the Opéra-Comique in Paris(1885-91). Here she sang in several premieres - 25. 4. 1885 Une nuit de Cléopâtre (Massé), 7.5.1888 ‘’Le roi d'Ys’’ (Lalo), 10.6.1891 ‘’Le Rêve’’ (Bruneau). In 1892 she sang the role of Dalila in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of Saint-Saëns in the première of the opera at the Paris Grand Opéra, where she worked from 1891 to 1902 as a famous prima donna. In 1891 she sang with triumph in a concert in Paris to the 100-th birthday of the composer Meyerbeer. In 1893 she sang at the Grand Opéra the role of Fricka in the première of the Wagner’s ‘’Walkure’’, on 19. 2. 1897 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Messidor’’ of A. Bruneau. In 1891 at the Covent Garden in London as Carmen and in the première of Bruneaus' ‘’La Rêve’’. On  2. 2. 1900 she created in the premiere of Charpentier’s ‘’Louise’’ at the Opéra-Comique the role of mother. Since 1889 she married the conductor Léon Jehin (1853-1928), who was active at the Opera House of Monte Carlo, where she guested regularly since 1889. There she also sang on 4. 3. 1894 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Hulda’’ of César Franck (after the death of the composer) the title role. On 9. 3. 1895 she appeared in ‘’ La Jacquerie’’ of Lalo. On 14. 2. 1903 she performed in ‘’Le Tasse’’ of Eugène d'Harcourt. on 14. 2. 1905 in the premiere of Massenet’s ‘’Chérubin’’ (as Baronne). Till 1913 she was to be heard at the Opera House of Monte Carlo, among other things in ‘’Hamlet’’ of A. Thomas, ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito (1910, 1912), ‘’Hélène’’ of Saint-Saëns, ‘’Rheingold’’ like in ‘’Siegfried’’ (1910, 1911 and 1913) and as a voice of the mother in ‘’Hoffmanns Erzählungen’’ (1911).

Alexis Boyer (Baritone) (1876-1954)



He studied singing at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in 1900 at the Opéra-Comique of Paris as Barnabé in ‘’Le Maître de Chapelle’’ of F. Paër. Then he sang in French provincial theatres and became in 1920 for the rest of his career, which lasted till 1945, a highly respected member of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He appeared in Brusselsin a number of French-speaking opera premières. He also appeared in operettas. Later he lived again in France.

Laure Bergé (Soprano)



She made her debut at the age of 19, in 1911 as Siebel in Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’ at the Opera House of Bayonne. After engagements at the opera houses of Bordeaux, Algiersand Lyon, she was appointed in 1919 to the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where she remained till 1927, and where she had a very successful career. She appeared in ‘’Fidelio’’, ‘’Tannhäuser’’,’’Lohengrin’’, ‘’Parsifal’’, ‘’Walkure’’, also in ‘’Siegfried’’, ‘’Les Huguenots’’ ‘’La Juive’’, ‘’Sapho’’, ’’Hérodiade’’ etc.  In 1919  she made guest appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and also in Italy.

He made his debut at the Opera House of Campi Bisenzio as Duke in Verdi’s ‘’Rigoletto’’ (1925). In 1927 he appeared at Firenzeas Almaviva in Rossini’s ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’. In 1931 he sang at the Teatro Regio in Parmaagain in ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’, here he also performed in Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’ (1939). In 1933 at the  Teatro dell'Opera di Roma he appeared in ‘’I quatro rusteghi’’. In 1936 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala as Fenton in Verdi’s ‘’Falstaff’. In 1938 he went to USA and sang at  San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cincinnatiand at the Metropolitan Opera in ‘’Rigoletto’’, ‘’Martha’’, ‘’L'Elisir d’amore’’ and ‘’L'Amico Fritz’’. Then he made successful guest appearances at  Città del Messico, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Santiago del Cile and Rosario. In 1939 he returned to the Teatro alla Scala and performed in Wolf-Ferrari’s ‘’La dama boba’’. In 1947 he appeared at the Teatro Pergolesi in ‘’Manon’’.

He studied in Marseille under Boudouresque and made his debut in 1900 at Nice. After significant success at the opera houses of Lyon, Lüttich (1904-05) and Geneva (1906-07), he sang in the 1910-11 season at the Opera House of Nice, from 1911-14 at the Opera House of Brussels (Théâtre de la Monnaie) where he appeared with great success. In 1914 he created in Brusselsin the première of the ‘’Parsifal’’ the role of Amfortas. He sang this part also in 1914 in the première of the ‘’Parsifal’’ at the Grand Opéra of Paris, where he made his debut in 1912 as Grand Prêtre in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’. He sang at the Grand Opéra till 1936. On 14. 3. 1921 he performed at the Grand Opéra in the premiere of the opera ‘’Antar’’ of Dupont, ‘’La Légende de Saint Christophe’’ of Vincent d'Indy (1920), ‘’Nerto’’ of Charles-Marie Widor (1924), ‘’Sept Chansons’’ Gian Francecso Malipiero (1928), ‘’Virginie’’ of Alfred Bruneau (1931). After his retirement He worked as a vocal pedagogue at Nice.

Louis Izar (Tenor) (Toulouse ? - ?)



He studied singing at the Conservatories of Toulouse and Paris under Engel and Isnardon. He made his debut at Nice (1923), where he stayed for two seasons. In 1925 he was engaged by the Opera-Comique in Paris. At the provincial opera houses he performed as Pinkerton in Puccini’s ‘’Madama Butterfly’’,  Jean in ‘’Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame’’ etc.At  Rouenhe sang in 1927 the role of Mime in ‘’Siegfried’’, her most famous role. After the World War II he organized opera tours at the South of France. Being the director of the Theatre du Capitole of Toulouse(1948-1968), he retired from the stage in 1949.

Jean Anzani (Tenor) (? 1902 - ?)



He made his debut at the Opera-Comique in Paris as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s ‘’Tosca’’ (1930). In 1935 he travelled with a group of singers (the Irish tenor John O’Sullivan, Greek baritone Ferdulli, Yvonne Brega and Yvonne Schneider) on the ship Fridon to Piraues, the port of Athens. He was trained by the pedagogue Alfredo Torri in Pisa and made his debut at the Teatro Politeamo at Pisain 1894. He sang the third act from Verdi’s ‘’Ernani’’ and the opera scene written for baritone and chorus from Arturo Birg’s ‘’Evaldo’’. Here in the 1895-98 seasons he performed in concerts. His real debut was happened in 1898 at the Teatro Politeama of Livorno in ‘’Traviata’’. In 1899 he sang at the Teatro Garibaldi of Chioggiathe role of Count di Luna in Verdi’s ‘’Trovatore’’ and the Germont in ‘’Traviata’’. In 1901 he guested in Milano, Acqui Terme and Svizzera. In 1902 he appeared at the Teatro Duse of Bolognain ‘’Maria di Rohan’’ of Donizetti. In 1905 again in Pisa he performed in Giordano’s ‘’Andrea Chénier’’. In the 1909-1910 seasons he made successful guest appearances at Lodz, Kaunas, Minsk, Baku and Orenburg. In 1912 he sang at the Teatro Fraschini in Pavia in ‘’La Fanciulla del West’’ From 1917 to 1918, as a menber of the Gonzales Opera Company, he appeared in Australia. In the 1931-33 seasons he sang different opera parts at the Italian broadcasting company EIAR in Turin. After his retirement he lived in Pisa. He made only one record for Beka.

Henri Dangès (Baritone) (?1870 – Paris 1948)

During the 1898-1902 seasons he appeared at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Here in 1900 he sang a small role in the premiere of Charpentier’s ‘’Louise’’. In the 1902-03 season he was engaged by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and then sang at the French provincial theatres. In 1908 made his debut at the Grand Opéra in Paris appearing as Valentine in Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’ and till 1912 perfomed here with great success. In 1911 he sang at the Grand Opéra in the première of Giordano’s ‘’Siberia’’ and appeared in the same year there in the opera ‘’Déjanire’’ of Saint-Saëns. He sang also at the Opera House of Monte Carlo (1911 as Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’) and at Cairo. In 1905 he appeared at the Opera House of Lyon in the premiere of the opera ‘’Les Girondins’’ of Fernand Le Borne. In the 1911-12 season he was a member of the Boston Opera. Still in 1928 he made guest appearance in Amsterdamas Morales in ‘’Carmen’’.
