Valère Blouse (Baritone) (La Bouverie 1892 - Marseille 1970)

He studied singing at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons under Edouard Martiny. In 1919 his long stage career began in Verviers. He appeared with success at Limoges, Nantes, Nancy, La Rochelle, Algiers, Oran, Ghent, Rouen, Bordeaux and Lyon. In 1934 he was engaged by the Opera House of Marseille in which he performed till 1963. Guest performances led him to many French opera houses, but the Opera House of Marseille to which he belonged longer than thirty years remained a center of his artistic career. He guested among other things at Grand Opéra in Paris (1935, as Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’), at the Opera House of Monte Carlo (1944 and 1951, as Kurwenal in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’), at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels(1953). His repertoire contained 120 parts and his famous roles were Scarpia in Puccini’s ‘’Tosca’’, Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, Rigoletto, Athanaël in ‘’Thaïs’’ of Massenet, Jago in Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’, Alfonso in ‘’La Favorite’’ of  Donizetti, Nevers in ‘’Hugenotten’’ of Meyerbeer, Enrico in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, Wolfram in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Amfortas in ‘’Parsifal’’. He worked later as song pedagogue at the Marseille Conservatoire.

Her real name was Jeanne Beugnon. She studied singing under Maurice Jacquet. She made her debut in 1896 at Versaillesin A. Maillart’s ‘’Les dragons de Villars’’. She made her debut at Opéra-Comique of Parisin ‘’Lakmé’’ of Delibes opposite American soprano  Marie Van Zandt.  She appeared at Opéra-Comique of Paris till 1917.

Louis Dornay (Louis Goldsteen) (Tenor) (Amsterdam 1876 – USA 1940)



His real name was Louis Goldsteen. He made his debut in 1909 with the Opera-Vereeniging (Opera Company) in the role of Walter van der Vogelweide in Wagner's ‘’Tannhauser’’. In 1910 he appeared with the same company in the role of Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’. Carmen herself was sung by Irma Lozin. Between 1909 and 1925 he gave numerous performances in the Netherlands, of which between 1914 and 1918 regular with the Franse (French) Opera in The Hague ( Theatre Royal de La Haye) , in roles as Arnold (‘’Guillaume Tell’’), Faust, Radames (‘’Aida’’), Tanhauser, the duke (‘’Rigoletto’’), Manrico (‘’Trovatore’’), Eleazar (‘’La Juive’’) and many others. He appeared opposute: Maartje Offers (Amneris, Aida and Dalila from ‘’Samson and Dalila’’), Joy Mac-Arden (Marguerite, ‘’Faust’’), Liesbeth Poolmann-Meisner (Elisabeth, ‘’Tannhauser’’), Greta Santhagens-Manders (Elisabeth, ‘’Tannhauser’’) and Lea Fuldauer (Nedda, ‘’Paljas’’). He sang also regular abroad, in Belgium in LiЁge, in 1913 in Aachen, afterwards in Berlin. From 1920 he sang in the United States, where he later settled down. Abroad he used the name of Louis Dornay.

Pauline Donalda (Soprano) (Montreal 1882 – Montreal 1970)




Her real name was Pauline Lightstone; her family was of Russian-Polish origin. The college, where she studied in Montreal had been founded by Sir Donald Smith. The first education as singer she received at the Victoria Collegein Montreal by Clara Lichtenstein, then she studied singing under Edmond Duvernoy in Paris. She made her debut in 1904 at the Opera House of Nice in the title role of Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’. In the 1905-1906 season she appeared with great success at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 1906 she married to French baritone Paul Seveilhac. Then since 1905 she sang a lot at Covent Garden, where she was promoted by Nellie Melba; here she made her debut in 1905 as Micaela in ‘’Carmen’’ and appeared on 28. 6. 1905 in the premiere of the opera ‘’L'Oracolo’’ of Franco Leoni. Because of an ocular illness she forced to pause in 1906 six months, however, she appeared again by the end of the year at the Théâtre de la Monnaie. In 1906 together with Paul Seveilhac she performed at Manhattan Opera House of New York and both broke the existing contracts with the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. At Manhattan Opera House her beginning role was Marguerite in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod (1907). In 1907 she was engaged by the Opera House of Monte Carlo (debuted again as Manon in Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’). Guest performances followed to the Opéra-Comique in Paris(1907, as Manon in Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’) and to the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, concert traveling through Germany, Holland and Russia. Since 1912 she had again big success at London Covent Garden, among other things as a partner of the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso in ‘’La Bohème’’ and in ‘’La Traviata’’. During the years of the First World War she remained in Canada where she visited just her family with outbreak of war. She was appointed the honorary member of the Red Cross of Canada. In the 1919-20 season she appeared again at Covent Garden, among other things in 1919 as Concepcionin the première of Ravel’s ‘’L'Heure espagnole’’ and finished with it her stage career. After a vast concert trip in the 1921-22 season she lived from 1923-37 as a singing teacher in Paris. After her separation from Paul Seveilhac she was since 1918 in the second marriage with Danish tenor Mischa Léon. Since 1937 she worked as a pedagogue in Montreal, where she also been active as an opera director. In 1942 she founded the Opera Guild of Montreal. She served as president and artistic director until 1969.

Henrik Drzewiecki (Tenor) (Poland, Kutno 1871 – USA? 1937)


He studied at the University of law in Saint Petersburg by obtaining a doctoral degree. At the same time, he studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg. From here he went to Italy, where he studied singing with italian vocal pedagogues. He made his debut at Valencia (Spain) in "Rigoletto" by G. Verdi.  Then he appeared in Venice, Modena, and Livorno (Italy). In 1900 he joinedto the Lwów Theatre, where he performed till 1902. During this period he appeared also in Krakow. After a period in Lviv Opera House he  moved to Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here for the first time he sang in 1902 in Moniuszko’s ‘’Straszny dwór’’. There he created roles in operas such as: "Halka", "Traviata" and "Faust". He also had guest appearances in Kraków and Lviv. Critics praised his excellent vocal talent. After the First World War he started to work as a lawyer. He was a judge at the County Court in Radom. In the 1920s he was a notary and moved to Las Vegas, where he had a partner in the law firm of notaries. He wrote articles for magazines.

Émile-Frantz Sardet (Tenor) (Oran 1882 – Monte Carlo 1913)




In the 1907-08 season he was engaged by the Opera House of Lyon. In 1908 he sang at the Théâtre Lyrique de la Gaîté in Paris as Arturo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, later at the same Opera House he appeared as Don Gasparo in Donizetti’s ‘’La Favorita’’, in the end, in 1911 in ‘’Ivan le Terrible’’ of Rimsky-Korsakov and in 1912 with great success in ‘’La fille de Mme Angot’’ of Lecoq. He also belonged to the ensemble of the Théâtre Gaîté which gave in 1912 a gala performance at the Paris Grand Opéra. A year later he has passed away still young in Paris.

He was at first an actor. After some appearances in operettas he made his opera debut in 1886 with the role of Méphistophéles (‘’Faust’’ Gounod) at  Hollandsche Opera company of  De Groot. Here he sang in 1889 in the premiere of 'Brinio' (Simon van Milligen). After 1890 guest appearances in Europa and later in America(Metropolitan Opera). From 1899 to his dead he joined the Opera Comique in Paris, where he sang the title role in the premiere of ‘’Macbeth’’ (E Bloch). He specialised above all to the French repertory. Debuted (1889) in Amsterdam as Gounod's Méphistophélès (‘Faust’’). He toured the U.S.with Jean de Reszke, Nellie Melba, and Emma Calvé before appearing with the Metropolitan Opera in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ as Mercutio (1898). Albers remained with the Metropolitan for one season and then returned to Europewhere he made his mark on the French stages. He appeared frequently at the Opéra-Comique, Covent Garden, and at the Monnaie in Brussels. Seen here as Scarpia.

Alexis Ghasne (Baritone) (Saint-Denis 1868 - ?)




His real name was Alexis Bobeuf. His education occurred at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1892 he made his debut at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brusselsto which he belonged till 1895. Here in 1892 he appeared in the premiere of the opera ‘’Maître Martin’’ of Jean Blockx. He performed afterwards in some opera houses of the French province (among other things at the Opera House of Nice) and then was engaged in 1897 by the Paris Opéra-Comique, to which he, apart from a short interruption in the 1911-12 season, when he was engaged again by the Théâtre de la Monnaie, belonged until 1919. Here he took over among other things in 1906 in the premiere of the opera ‘Aphrodite’’ of Camille Erlanger appearing in the part of Timon. In 1893 and 1911 he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in Londonas Valentin in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod. Probably he retired from the stage in 1919.

Probably he made his debut in 1898 at the Teatro Avvalorati of  Livorno in ‘’Paulus’’ of  F. Mendelsshon. In 1904 he sang the role of Sparafucile at the Teatro della Pergola in Firenze. In 1909 he appeared at the Teatro Comunale of Bolognain the premiere of the opera ‘’Rosellina Dei Vergani’’ of  E. Balilla Pratella. On 14. 10. 1911 he performed at the Teatro Dal Verme of Milanin the premiere of the opera ‘’Conchita’’ of  Riccardo Zandonai. In the 1912-13 season he was engaged by the Teatro alla Scala in which he sang in 1912 in the Italian première of ‘’La Habanéra’’ of Laparras and in 1913 in E. Wolf Ferrari’s ‘’Le Donne Curiose’’ (as Pantalone). In 1916 he appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Baldassare in ‘’La Favorita’’ of Donizetti and as Ramphis in ‘’Aida’’. At the Teatro Argentina in Rome he sang in 1926 the role of Geronte in ‘’Manon Lescaut’’of Puccini. He retired from the stage in 1946 appearing for the last time in Rossini’s ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’ at the Teatro Goldoni of Livorno.

She studied singing in Modenaunder Trebbi and made her debut in 1906 at the Teatro Sociale di Valenza Po in ‘’Il Boero’’ of I. Zanfi. In 1908 she appeared in the world premiere of W. Borg’s opera "Settecento" at the Teatro Mercadante of Napoli.

Fritz Windgassen (Tenor) (Hamburg, Germania 1883 - Murna, Germania 1963)



First he became a sailor, then since 1907 he studied singing at the conservatoire of Hamburg under Vilmar. He made his debut in 1909 at the Municipal Theatre of Harburg as Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’. Other engagements: In  the 1910-11 season  he appeared at the Municipal Theatre of Bremen, in the 1911-12 season at the Municipal Theatre of Hamburg, from 1912-23 he performed at the Court Theatre of Kassel, where he sang in 1916 in the premiere of the opera  "Veeda" of Georg Vollerthun. From 1923 to 1945 he appeared at the Stuttgart State Opera (beginning part: Walther von Stolzing in ‘’Meistersingers’’), where he appeared with great success. In 1941 he made guest appearance at the Opera House of Frankfurt a. M. as Siegfried in the Wagner's opera of the same name. During of his career he sang in several opera premieres: In Hamburg he performed in "Die Brautwahl" of F. Busoni (13. 4. 1912), in Stuttgart in "Der Gondoliere des Dogen"  of N. Reznicek (1931) and in "Michael Kohlhaas"  of Paul von Klenau (1933). There he also sang in 1928 in the German première of A. Boito’s opera ‘’Nerone’’. He was a highly respected concert singer. In 1949 he gave in Stuttgart his last concert. After his retirement he became a professor of the Stuttgart College of Music. He was married to soprano Vally van Osten (1882-1923)his son Wolfgang  Windgassen became a famous heroic tenor.

Franz Naval (Tenor) (Laibach, Slovenia 1865 – Vienna, Austria 1939)





His real name was Franz Pogacnik. He studied singing in Laibach with A. Nedred and then in Vienna under J.Gansbacher. He made his debut in 1888 at the Opera House of Frankfurt am Main  in ‘’Martha’’, during  the 1895-98 seasons he sang at the Berlin Hofoper, and in 1898 at the Vienna Hofoper. At the Berlin Hofoper he was frequently performed with Geraldine Farrar. In 1897, he sang the role of Rodolfo in the Berlin premiere of Puccini's ‘’La Boheme’’. During 1900-1903, Naval sang in Paris. Naval sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1903. In 1907 he made guest appearance at Covent Garden in "The Bartered bride". During 1903-1908, Naval was a permanent member of the Berlin Hofoper, and in 1908 with the Berlin Komische Oper. During this period, he was often the partner of Geraldine Farrar. Naval sang for 20 years in opera, but with diminishung success. For 30 years, He retired in Vienna where he taught singing. He appeared in the major tenor roles in ‘’Carmen’’, ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, ‘’La Dame Blanche’’, ‘’L'Elisir d'Amore’’, ‘’Faust’’, ‘’La Traviata’’, and ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’.

Her sister was the great soprano Salomea Krushelnytska. She studied singing at Conservatorio di musica “Giuseppe Verdi” di Milano. From 1907 to 1914 she appeared at the opera houses of Warsaw, Lviv, Roma, Milano, Venezia and Regio (1913-1914). She possessed a beautiful voice of a  ‘’ violoncello’’ timbre and excellent vocal school. Her best roles were Micalea in ‘’Carmen’’, Mimi  in ‘’Boheme’’, Iris in Mascagni’s ‘’Iris’’, Elisabetha in ‘’Tannhauser’’.From 1914 to 1928 she performed as a concert singer.
