Dinh Gilly (Baritone) (Algeri 1877 - London 1940)




He studied singing in Toulouse, Rome and at the Paris Conservatoire, and sang at the Opéra, 1902-8; he was at the Met, 1909-14, in such roles as Rigoletto, Albert (Werther) and Sonora in the première of ‘’La fanciulla del West’’. He retired in 1924. He was a musical, expressive singer and a fine actor.

Luise Perard-Petzl (Soprano) (Kloster Melk 1884 - München 1936)

After her education she had her first success under the name Luise Perard-Theissen at  the Hamburg Opera, where she appeared from 1907 to 1913. In the 1908-09 season she made guest appearances at Covent Garden and sang there till 1913 among other things as Chrysothemis in ‘’Elektra’’ of R. Strauss (1910). She performed also as Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Gutrune in "Götterdämmerung", Tosca and Aida. She sang in ‘’Tannhäuser’’ of Wagner both parts of the Elisabeth and Venus. In 1913 she alternated at Covent Garden in the première there of the "Rosenkavaliers" with Margarethe Siems in the part of the Marschallin and sang also in the première of the opera "Oberst Chabert" of Hermann Wolfgang von Waltershausen. In 1910 she made guest appearance in Amsterdam performing as Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’. In 1913 she was engaged by the Munich State Opera. Here she had till 1920 a successful career. On 16. 11. 1913 she sang in this Opera House in the premiere of the opera ‘’Sulamith’’ of Paul von Klenau. She appeared also as a guest in Berlin (1909), Frankfurt a. M. (1911), Zurich (1914), Brussels (1914) and in Oslo (1920). Later she worked as a singing teacher in Munich.

Laurent Swolfs (Tenor) (Gent 1868 - Gent 1954)



He studied singing in Antwerp and Brussels among other things with Désiré Demest. He began his career as a concert singer. Then he made his debut in 1901 at the Opera House of Antwerp as Max in ‘’Freischütz’’. In 1903 he was engaged by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he had longer than twenty years a successful career. In 1907 he created for Brusselsthe role of Herodes in ‘’Salome’’ of R. Strauss. In the 1908-09 season he worked at the Opera House of Lyon. In 1908, by the instigation of the composer Felix von Weingartner, who heard him in Antwerp, he appeared at the Vienna Court Opera in the leading role in Felix von Weingartner’s opera ‘’Genesius’’. In Vienna he performed also in ‘’Lohengrin’’ and ‘’Samson et Dalila’’. In 1910 he had at Grand Opéra of Paris a huge success as Siegmund and as Samson in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of Saint-Saëns. In 1913 he appeared there as as Loge in "Rheingold". In 1911 he sang at the Opéra-Comique of Parisin the premiere of the opera ‘’Bérénice’’ of Albéric Magnard. He also made guest appearance at the Opera House of Nice. After the First World War he became a successor of Ernest van Dyck as a professor at the Brussels Conservatoire. From 1923-25 he was at the same time the artistic manager of the Opera House of Antwerp. After his retirement he lived in Ghent. At the end of his life he became blind. He had a powerfully controlled and metallically shining voice.

She studied singing with Marie Sasse (also known as Marie Sax) and with MM. Barthot, Tequi, and Obin. She continued her studies with Rosine Laborde. She had successful career at Grand Opéra in Paris (debuted in 1890 as Maddalena in ‘’Rigoletto’’). Here she appeared on 16. 3. 1894 in a small part in the premiere of the opera ‘’Thaïs’’of Massenet. Still in the same year she sang there in the French première of Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’ performing as Emilia and on 25. 5. 1894 in the premiere of the opera ‘’ Djelma’’ of Charles Lefebvre. In 1895 she created at Grand Opéra the demanding title role in the premiere of the posthumous opera ‘’Frédégonde’’of Ernest Guiraud. The other premieres in which she appeared in this opera house were ‘’La Montagne Noire’’  of Augusta Holmès (8. 2. 1895), ‘’La Cloche du Rhin’’ of A. Bruneau (8. 6. 1898), ‘’Les Barbares’’ of Saint-Saëns (23. 10. 1901), ‘’Astarte’’ of Xavier Leroux (19. 2. 1901), ‘’Le Fils de l'Étoile’’ of Camille Erlanger (17. 4. 1904) and ‘’Miarka’’ of A. Georges (7. 12. 1905). On 21. 3. 1899 she performed in the premiere of the opera ‘’ Messaline’’ of Isidore de Lara at the Opera House of Monte Carlo opposite Francesco Tamagno. On 18. 2. 1904 she sang in Monte Carlo in the premiere of the opera ‘’Hélène’’ which Saint-Saëns dedicated to Nellie Melba, who created the leading role; on 19. 3. 1907 she appeared in the premiere of ‘’Théodora’’ of Xavier Leroux at Monte Carlo. In 1902 she created at Grand Opéra for Paristhe role of Erda in R. Wagner’s ‘’Siegfried’’. In 1898 she made guest appearance at Covent Garden in London in the première there of the opera ‘’Henri VIII’’ of Saint Saëns; in 1899, still in the year of the premiere, she sang in Londonin the première of ‘’Messaline’’ of I. de Lara. In 1903 she guested in Zurich as Dalila in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of Saint-Saëns. She married the famous composer Xavier Leroux (1863-1919) in whose operas she appeared often. Later she was active in Paris as pedagogue and soprano Ninon Vallin belonged to her pupils. In 1904 she made only four records for G&T.

Emma Baumann (Soprano) (Erfurt 1855 - Leipzig 1925)



Her real name was Emma Schubotz; at the age of five she came to Berlin and studied singing in Wroclaw under Frau Seidelmann. In 1878 she made her debut at the Municipal Theatre of Dortmund in the title role of Flotow’s ‘’Martha’’. Then she married to bass Caspar Baumann and retired from the stage. In 1882 she appeared again on the stage of the Municipal Theatre of Dortmund. In 1883 she made guest appearance at the Berlin Kroll Opera. In 1884 she was engaged by the Opera House of Leipzig (beginning role: Donna Elvira in ‘’Don Giovanni’’), and remained up to the end of her career in 1902 a member of this theatre. In Leipzigshe appeared with great success. Here she also sang in 1888 in the premiere of Weber’s opera ‘’Die drei Pintos’’in the revised version by Gustav Mahler. In 1888 she performed in the premiere of ‘’Auf hohen Befehl’’ of Carl Reineckes. She appeared as a guest at the Berlin Court Opera (also in 1890 and 1897), at the Court Opera of Dresden(regularly till 1901) and at the Court theatre of Weimar. Probably she made her last appearance in 1903 at Leipzigsinging in Rossini’s ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’. She also was a respected concert singer. In 1907 she received a teaching assignment from the Leipzig Conservatoire; later she was appointed the honorary member of the Leipzig Opera. In 1899 she made only three records for Berliner.

Carolina White (Soprano) (Massachusetts 1886 – Roma 1961)



She made her operatic debut (1908) as Gutrune in ‘’Götterdämmerung’’ at the Teatro San Carlo (Naples). She was Minnie in the first performance of ‘’La Fanciulla del West’’ at the Chicago Opera. There she sang Maliella in the American premiere of ‘’I Gioielli della Madonna’’. After 1914 she was seen mostly in operettas and concert appearances. In 1918 she appeared with Enrico Caruso in the silent film, ‘’My Cousin Caruso’’.

Anna Case (Soprano) ( Clinton, New Jersey 1888 – New York City 1984)

Her teacher was  Mme Ohrström-Renard in New York. She made her debut in 1909 with the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera at the New Theatre in New York as comprimaria in ‘’Werther’’ of Massenet. At the Metropolitan Opera at first she took over small parts, until she sang in 1913 in the American première of ‘’Boris Godunov’’; the same year she also appeared in the American première of ‘’Rosenkavalier’’ as Sophie. Till 1915 she remained a member of the Metropolitan Opera; she sang in  the 1916-17 season and from 1919-20 once more there, but only in the Sunday Night Concerts. Since 1920 she was excluding concert soprano. She appeared not only in North America, but also in Europe. In 1929 she married to multimillionnaire and Clarence Mackay and withdrew from the music life.

Anita Rio (Soprano) (Almeda, California 1873 – Old Saybrook, Connecticut 1971)


She studied in San Francisco and New York. Her concert debut occurred in 1897 at Bostonin ‘’Messiah’’ of Handel. She remained some years as a concert singer in America, then she additionally studied singing in Italy. She married to American song pedagogue Armour Galloway in Milan. In 1909 she made her opera debut at Covent Garden in Londonas Donna Elvira in ‘’Don Giovanni’’. During the following five years she sang a lot in Italy– in opera performances and at the concert hall. In 1912 she had at the Teatro Costanzi, Roma in Bellini’s ‘’La Sonnambula’’ a shining success opposite Alessandro Bonci. She more often gave guest performances in Genoaand at the Teatro Rossini in Venice. Especially she was famous for her interpretation  of Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’ and Madama Butterfly in Puccini’s ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. In 1914 she came back to Americaand performed there. After the death of her husband she was active in New York as a pedagogue.

For a short time he studied law and worked as a journalist before beginning singing lessons with, among others, the composers Chabrier and Massenet, an association that led to his creation of Massenet's Werther in 1892. His first appearance in Bayreuthwas in 1888 as Parsifal. Although he did not have the most beautiful voice, his intelligence and the ability to learn roles on short notice were a godsend to opera house managements.

Maurice Décléry (Baritone) (? 1873 - Paris 1957)

After his education he made his debut in 1897 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he remained engaged till 1900. Then he appeared in 1900 and 1901 as a guest at Covent Garden in London, among other things as Nevers in ‘’Les Huguenots’’ of Meyerbeer and as Valentin in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod. In 1901 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York in which he remained till 1903. Here as a beginning part he sang the role of Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, later he performed in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’, ‘’Faust’’, ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and ‘’Pagliacci’’. He returned in 1903 again to Europe and became again a member of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he finished his career in 1923. To his most important parts belonged the Germont in ‘’La Traviata’’, Ourrias in ‘’Mireille’’ of Gounod, Lothario in ‘’Mignon’’ of A. Thomas, Vézir in ‘’Marouf’’ of H. Rabaud, Lescaut in Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’,  Francois in ‘’Le Chemineau’’ of Xavier Leroux and the Chilon in ‘’Quo vadis?’’ of Nouguès, parts which he also reported at guest performances in French theaters. He wrote his family name sometimes also as de Cléry.

Jean Delvoye (Baritone) (Liège 1861 - Ougrée 1938)



He studied singing at the Conservatory of Liège under Mr Bonheur, then with Carmon and Ismaël. He started his career in Dunkerqueduring the 1887-1888 season, then appeared in Angersand Nantes and Marseilles. After the season in Nice, he went to Lyon. Then he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique of Paris in which he performed many years. In 1901 he appeared there in Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’ opposite Mary Garden and Leon Beyle. In the same opera he sang also in 1905, but this time as a partner of Edmond Clement and Marguerite Carre. 1907 appeared in the premiere of the opera ‘’Le Chemineau’’ (1907) of X. Leroux. Probably he retired from the stage in 1910.

Madeleine Mathieu (Soprano)

She studied singing at the Paris Conservatoire under the pedagogues Cazeneuve, Gailhard and Isnardon. She made her debut in 1913 at the Paris Opéra-Comique as Anita in ‘’La Navarraise’’ of Massenet. She had in this opera house a long standing career and was to be heard there in parts like Carmen, Tosca, Butterfly and also Suzuki in Puccini’s ‘’Madama Butterfly’’, Santuzza in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and the princess in ‘’Marouf’’ of Henri Rabaud. In 1921 she sang as a guest at the Teatro Liceo of Barcelona in the première there of the opera ‘’L'Étranger’’ of Vincent d'Indy. In 1922 she had one of her biggest success when she sang at the Music Festival of Zurich the role of Carmen which counted in general her special star role. After her retirement she worked in Paris as respectable pedagogue and was among other things the teacher of Robert Massard, Margaret Mas and R.Gardes.

She studied singing at the Paris Conservatoire under Melchissèdec, Mangin and other teachers. In 1895 she won the Prix of the Paris Conservatoire and made her debut in the same year at the Opéra-Comique of Paris in the title part of the opera ‘’Galathée’’ of Victor Massé. Then she appeared for some time at French provincial opera houses, but in 1899 again came back to the Opéra-Comique. There she appeared as Eurydice in ‘’Orpheus’’ of Gluck, Donna Elvira in ‘’Don Giovanni’’, Alice Ford in ‘’Falstaff’’ of Verdi, Manon in Massenet’s ‘’Manon’’ and Musetta in Puccini’s ‘’La Bohème’’. Then she undertook tours appearing again at the French provincial opera houses and in 1908 engagement she was engaged by the Théâtre Lyrique of Paris. Probably she retired from the stahe in 1910.
