César Vezzani (Tenor) (Bastia, Corsica 1886 – Marseille 1951)

                                                                Canio

He was born in Bastia on Corsica and came to Paris in 1908. He hardly knew how to read and write and speaking a poor French! His voice was first discovered by the sopranist Agnes Borgo (1879 - 1958). She became his first teacher and sent him to the Conservatoire National de Paris. They married in 1913. He made his debut in Grétry’s ‘’Richard Coeur de Lion’’ at the Opéra-Comique in 1912. The couple was invited to sing in Boston and Chicago, but World War I broke out and they had to cancel. A disagreement with the management of the Opéra-Comique arose, after which his career was largely confined to the operas of Nizza, Marseille, Toulon and Toulouseand Brussels. He never returned to Paris. During World War II he lived in exile and appeared at the opera of Algier, where he was much admired. In 1947 he signed a contract for three years with the La Monnaie Brussels, but during a rehearsal on stage in Toulon he suffered a stroke which paralysed him completely. He died in 1951. Vezzani is a dramatic tenor of great brilliance and with a ringing top. There is a vibrant vitality in his singing. I particularly admire him as Otello (in excellent French, a forgotten art today). Di quella pira from ‘’Il Trovatore’’ and Reyer’s ‘’Sigurd’’ as well as Corentin in ‘’Dinorah’’ show him at his very best.

Stanisław Gruszczyński (Tenor) ( Ludwinowie 1891 - Milanówku 1959)

                                                               Lohengrin

First he became a waiter; because he could not finance his education, he studied singing by listening sound recordings of other singers. In 1916 he made his debut at the Warsaw Opera as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. He was so successful that he already engaged to sing in Hamburg and Berlin. During the 1920s he made guest appearances in Italy, in particular in Milan and in Madrid. In 1924 he had at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo only low success and decided to leave Italy. He returned to Polandand became a great favourite of the Warsaw Opera. He counted, above all in the Wagner's repertoire, as the successor of the popular tenor Ignacy Dygas. Also as Otello in Verdi's opera of the same name. In 1922 he performed at the Warsaw Opera  in the premiere of the opera ''Hagith'' of  K. Szymanowski. From 1926-31 he was very successful in Warsaw, then, nevertheless, he lost a huge fortune and quickly became a compulsive alcoholic, so he lived almost as a beggar. He died on February 3, 1959 in Milanówek He was endowed with exceptional abilities and major musical memory, learning each role very quickly. He was awarded, among others Officer's Cross of the Order of Polish Rebirth (1955). In Poland he made meteoric career and gained a reputation as one of the most famous Polish opera singers of his time.

Lindi made guest apperances also in Venice (Teatro La Fenice), Barcelona (Teatro Liceo), Monte Carlo, Cairo, Stockholm and Paris where at the Grand Opéra he appeared in 1930 as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. He later was the star tenor touring with the Fortune Gallo's San Carlo Opera Company during the 1930s until his death. Lindi died in 1944 at age 55 on stage in San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, during a performance of ‘’Pagliacci’’, singing Vesti la giubba.

"Aroldo Lindi was a great dramatic tenor, with a resounding B flat, and could sing anybody under the table. He was terrific. We were on tour in Canada and he had a heart attack in Winnepeg. The company went on to Portland, where he did a Carmen with me there. That was his first since his heart attack. He sang a beautiful performance. On to San Francisco, he was to do Pagliacci that night. He called me the night before and said ' Coe, could you please go up into the audience and let me know how my voice sounds,' I did and then went backstage as he was beginning the aria. From a chair in the wings, I heard Lindi doing the Ridi Pagliacci, 'in..fronto'... he was holding that note and I thought he was trying some new business. And the poor man, he wasn’t, he was dying. And he was holding that note. In desparation, I ran up on stage. I saw his knees buckle, and I went on stage in my fur cape and gardenias, and by then, somebody had begun to ring down the curtain. As he sang this aria, the note was being held, until he died, right in my arms. I'll never forget the expression on his face, when his soul left his body. He turned back forty years, a young man of twenty. It was unbelieveable. Very chilling, very chilling. A beautiful death for a singer...singing his favorite aria...holding his favorite note. " Coe Glade, mezzo-s., during VRCS interview, Chicago.
