Alexander Bragin (Baritone) (Kiev province 1881 – Moscow 1955)

The real surname of this singer was Braginsky. First he studied singing privately with Mikhail Medvedev, then from 1896 to 1901 at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under the pedagogues S. Gabel and I. Tartakov. Additionally he studied also abroad during his visits (1904-1913). He made his debut in 1900 at the National Opera house of Ukraine as Valentine in Gounod’s ‘’Faust’’. From 1905 to 1908 he was a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. In the 1908-1909 season he appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. From 1909 to 1911 Bragin againg performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. From 1911 to 1915 he appeared in operetta at St. Petersburg. Since 1914 Bragin made guest appearances in the cities of Russia. In the 1922-1923 season he sang in Berlin. From 1924 to 1928 in different opera houses of Germany. Since 1930 he devoted himself to teaching first in Odessa, then in Moscow, Frunze, Kiev, Tashkent and Baku.

He was one of the best bass/baritones of his time. He was born in Novocherkassk (according to some, in Rostov-on-Don) in a family locksmith. He studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the class of S. Gabel . In 1896 he made his debut on the opera stage in the entreprise of A. Tsereteli (Kharkov) as Gremin in ‘’Eugene Onegin’’. From 1897 to 1918 he was soloist of the St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, and his best roles were Susanin ("Life for the Tsar" by M. Glinka), Farlaf ( "Ruslan and Ludmila" of Glinka), Miller ("Mermaid" of Dargomyzhsky), Mephistophele ("Faust" by C. Gounod ), Demon in A. Rubinstein’s ‘’Demon’’, Dobrynya Nikitich in A. Gretchaninov’s ‘’Dobrynya Nikitich’’.  At the Mariinsky Theatre took part in the operas " Boheme" by Puccini, where he sang the role of Schaunard , and "Nal and Damayanti’’ of Arensky. Toured with the troupe of N. Figner (Odessa, Penza, Samara, etc.), also appeared on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, in Riga, Baku, Kiev, Odessaand other cities. He died of tuberculosis in St. Petersburg in 1918.

Arnold Gabor (Baritone) (Budapest 1880 – New York 1950)




He was of jewish origin. He studied singing in Berlinand in Italyand appeared with success in the first decade of the 20th  century in South German opera stages. In 1911 he was engaged by the Budapest People's Opera. Then he had a successful career at the Budapest National Opera. In 1914 with great success he created there for Hungary the role of Amfortas in the Hungarian première of the ‘’Parsifal’’. In 1914 he came back again to Germany and was active in following decade in different German opera stages, among other things in Dessau. In Dessau he sang in 1920 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Magda Maria’’ of Oscar  von Chelius. In 1923 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera of New York (beginning role: Nachtwächter in ‘’Meistersingern’’). Till 1941 he remained a respected member of this opera house; he sang here a huge number of comprimario roles, but also roles like Alberich or Klingsor in ‘’Parsifal’’. In the 1931-32 season he made guest appearance at the Opera House of San Francisco. Later he worked in educational area in New York. His brother Jozsef Gabór (Balassagyarmat, Hungary 1879 - Illéspuszta, Slovakia 1929) was active from 1904-13 as tenor at the National Opera of Budapest.

He received his education in Germany, namely from W. Kloed, Ludwig Wüllner and Fritz Steinbach in Cologne. He made his debut in 1914 at the Court Opera of Stuttgart. Here he appeared as Giovanni de Salviati on 26. 9. 1915 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Mona Lisa’’ Max von Schillings. Until 1919 he was a member of the Stuttgart Opera, then till 1926 sang at the Vienna State Opera. Here he sang on 10. 10. 1919 the role of Emperor in the premiere of ‘’Frau ohne Schatten’’ R. Strauss. In Vienna he was celebrated as a partner of famous soprano Maria Jeritza with whom he had his great success in ‘’Toten Stadt’’ of Korngold (1921) and ‘’Ariadne auf Naxos’’ of R. Strauss. In 1924 with the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera he made guest appearances in Amsterdam among other things as Bacchus in ‘’Ariadne auf Naxos’’ of R. Strauss, who considered him one of the best interpreters of this part. In 1926 he had a conflict with the Vienna State Opera, when he wanted to appear at the Vienna Carl Theatrein an operetta. The management of the Vienna State Opera forbade him and he picked up his engagement in Vienna. In the 1927-30 seasons he appeared at the Städtischen Oper in Berlin. He made guest appearances in Basel (1917), Munich (1919), Budapest, Hamburg (1926) and in 1933 again at the Städtischen Oper in Berlin. Since 1923 he undertook the vast concert tours, which brought him great success not only in Europe, but also in North America. His second wife was the soprano Maria Rajdl (1900-1972), who later was active together with him in Oslo as pedagogue. Since 1932 he lived as a pedagogue and opera director in Oslo. After the occupation of Norway by the Nazi German soldiers he took over in 1941 the management of the opera house in Oslo. After end of the war he was arrested temporarily as a collaborator; later he lived secludedly in Oslo. His daughter Lillemari Oestvig, who became known as a concert soprano, came from his marriage with Maria Rajdl.

Theodor Schütz (Tenor) (Prague 1878 – Prague 1961)

His real name was Bohdan Procházka. From 1897-1900 he studied at the Pivodově singing school and also privately with K. Kovařovic. He made his debut at the National Theatre of Prague in Wagner's "Lohengrin" (1899). Then he was a member of the F. Trnky’s opera company (1902), sang also in Pilsen (1902-1903), and at the National Theatre in Brno (1903-1905), where he performed in the world premiere of Janáček's famous opera "jenůfa". After this he went to Viennato study singing with E. Robinson (1905-1907). Thanks to his help first he became a member of the local theatre Hofoper, then was engaged by the German Theatre in Olomouc. In the 1907-1908 season he appeared at the  Hofoper Wien, then from 1908-1911 at the Volksoper Wien. He appeared briefly in Berlin, but goined in 1911 to the National Theatre of Prague, whose member he remained for 27 years and retired from the stage in 1938. In 1913 he appeared in Praguein the local premiere of ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’, the next year in the première of ‘’Parsifal’’. On 27.4.1927 he sang there in the premiere of the opera "Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer" of Jaromir Weinberger. Internationally he was known by his guest performances abroad.  appeared with success also in North America

Alfred Goltz (Tenor) (Emmendingen, Baden 1877 - 1941?)

He was of Jewish origin and his real name was Alfred Goldschmidt. First he was trained as baritone and was active in this field till 1905. He appeared successfuly at the Municipal theatre of Nuremberg (1899-1900), then appeared at the Municipal Theatre of Regensburg (1900-1901), this followed by appearances at the Municipal Theatre of Koblenz (1901-02) . His other appearances was happened at the Municipal Theatre of Rostock (1902-03) and at the Municipal Theatre of Basel (1903-04). In the 1904-05 season he sang at the Municipal Theatre Mülhausen. Then he changed to tenor and was engaged to appear at the Opera House of Leipzig, whose member he remained till 1908. From 1908-10 he sang at the Court Opera of Stuttgart, in the 1910-12 seasons at the Court Theatre of Coburg. His career reached his climax after an engagement by the Deutschen Oper Berlin-Charlottenburg, to which he belonged up to his military service in 1917. After the end of the war he sang in the 1919-20 season at the National Theatre of Weimar. In 1909 he appeared in Stuttgartin the premiere of the opera ''Princess Brambilla'' of W. Braunfels. He made guest appearances in Dresden,  Brunswick, Wroclaw and Riga. The main emphasis of her repertoire are the works of R. Wagner - Erik in ''Fliegenden Holländer'',  Lohengrin, Siegmund in ''Walkure’’, Loge in ‘’Rheingold’’, Tristan, but also Arnoldo in Rossini’s  ‘’Wilhelm Tell’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Tamino in ‘’Magic flute’’ and Faust. Still in 1941 he lived in Berlin, but what happened after is remaining obscure.

He was born on July 26, 1875 in Las Palmas. His real name was Nestor de la Torre Comminges. Self-sacrificing musician and philanthropist, Della Torre was an exceptional baritone of brilliant international career. From a very early age he studied singing under the teacher Bernardino Valle Chiniestra, but additionally he received education in Madridfrom the singer Carolina Cefeda and later in Italy. In 1894 he made his debut at the Teatro Prince Alfonso in  ‘’Favorita’’ of Donizetti. The same year he sang in Milan.  He devoted himself to developing his operatic talent singing always with great success. He realized a tour along South America, and appeared also with success at the  imperial theatres of Russia. Establishing himself in Rome(1900), he  Italianisized his name and called Nestore della Torre by which he was known during all his career. In 1901 he appeared in the opening of the Theatro Arriaga de Bilbao. On the following year h sang at La Scala of Milan in ‘’Oceana’’ of the composer Smareglia, and later at the Teatro Liceo of Barcelonain ‘’Lohengrin’’of  Wagner (1903). In 1908 family problems forced him to leave the stage and to be established by his family in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He devoted hitself to the pedagogical career, collaborating actively in the musical life of the island. In 1918 he returned to Gran Canaria, where worked as a singing pedagogue. There  one of his as a pupil was Isabel Macario. After a tour along South America in 1920 he went with his family to Cuba. In Havana he was a teacher of several conservatories and of the Municipal Academy of Music. He remined in Caribbean island during a decade. There he and gave his last concert. On the following year he went to Tenerife, but in 1933 he traveled to Madrid, where he and died on August 23., 1933.

Probably he made his debut in 1891 as Alfonso in ‘’Favorita’’ at the Teatro Guillame in Brescia. In the 1896-1897 seasons he was in Parma, where at the Teatro Regio he sang in ‘’Andrea Chenier’’, ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and ‘’Pagliacci’’. Then he traveled to Amsterdamand in the 1898-99 seasons appeared at the Paleis Voor Volksvlijt in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and ‘’Carmen’’. In 1899 he also made guest appearance in Barcelona. There at the Teatro Liceo he appeared in ‘’Boheme’’. Guest appearances followed in Santiago del Cile (1901), Lisbon (1908), Alessandria(1917) and Madrid(1924). Early he started to appear also as comprimario (1903) and retired from the stage in 1926.

He was one of the best opera singers of his time. He studied singing under Adolf Robinson in Brünn. He made his debut as baritone in 1896 at the Municipal Theatre of Brünn as Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’. Then till 1897 he was active at the Municipal Theatre of Olmütz and in 1898 he was engaged by the Berlin Court Opera. Here he sang among other things on 18. 4. 1899 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Mudarra’’ of Fernand Le Borne, on 10. 4. 1900 in Ferdinand Hummel's opera ‘’ Die Beichte’’, on 13. 12. 1904 in the premiere of Leoncavallo’s opera ‘’Der Roland von Berlin’’; on 14. 4. 1905 in the Berlinpremiere of E.Humperdinck’s ‘’Die Heirat wider Willen’’. In 1901, 1906 and 1908 he appeared at Bayreuth Festival in ‘’Parsifal’’ and ‘’Götterdämmerung’’. In 1908 he retired for a year and studied under Oscar Sänger, reappearing as a tenor in ‘’Lohengrin’’ at a performance in Berlin in 1909. In 1913 he married the American soprano Marie Rappold (1879-1957). After guest performances, primarily, in Wagner's operas in Paris, London, Prague and Amsterdam as well as at the Vienna Court Opera, in 1913 he was engaged to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (debuted in 1914 as Siegmund in ‘’Walküre’’). In his two seasons, he sang 24 performances of 8 roles, including Siegfried, Lohengrin, Walther, Parsifal, Tristan, and Tannhäuser. His only non-Wagnerian role was Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. However, his career total number of roles was 96 as a baritone and 18 as a tenor. He suddenly died, at the height of his career, only 41 years old.

Antonio Salvarezza (Tenor) Alessandria 1902 - Levata, Bosco Marengo 1985)

He spent his youth in South America and worked at first in Buenos Airesin a business occupation. Then he studied there under the pedagogue Filippo Florio and made his debut in 1937 at the Teatro Municipale of Rio de Janeiro as Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, where in the 938-39 season sang in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, ‘’Bohème’’, ‘’Madame Butterfly’’, then he was to be heard as a guest at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In general he  became famous when he sang in 1939 at La Scala in Milan the role of Arturo in ‘’Puritani’’of Bellini. At La Scala he appeared till 1946. During the Second World War he appeared at the famous Italian opera houses, also at the Opera House of Rome (1938-50). In 1943 he made guest appearance at the Vienna State Opera. In 1946 he sang in Chicago and Philadelphia. In the 1946-48 seasons he guested at Cambridge Theatre in London appearing among other things as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’ and Rodolfo in ‘’Bohème’’. Guest performances and concert tours led him to France, Holland, Belgiumand Austria. In 1952 he appeared at the Maggio musicale in Florence. He performed also at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, at the Opera Houses of Geneva, Monte Carlo, Cairo and Madrid. In 1939 he sang at the Opera House of Rome in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Zolfara’’ of Giuseppe Mulè. In 1959 he appeared at the Opera House of Rome the role of Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’.

He began his career in 1911 and received great success as a member of the Opéra-Comique in Paris. In this opera house his first role was Werther (1917). In 1920 he appeared there in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Rôtisserie de la Reine Pedauque’’ of Charles Lavadé. During the 1920’s he also made guest appearances at the opera houses of Monte Carlo, Marseille and Nice as well as in many French provincial stages. His best parts were De Grieux and Werther. In 1943 he became a manager of the opera house of Marseille. Jean Marny was his artistic name, the real name of the singer was Jean Cèbe.
